Drug Take Back
Event: Mercer County
Celina OH – On Saturday, April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Mercer
County Sheriff’s Office will be holding a drug take back event as part
of the National Drug Take Back Initiative. During this event, the
public will have the opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by
ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and
unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your medications for disposal to The
Mercer County Detention Facility parking lot at 4835 State Route 29.
The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. Please do not
bring syringes or liquids.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health
issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible
to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in
the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental
poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a
majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and
friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition,
Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of
unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the
trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.
So far in 2016, the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office has collected over
75 pounds of drugs from the Drug Drop Box located in the lobby of the
Sheriff’s Office and from take back events. The public is reminded that
if they are unable to make it to the organized take back event, the
drop box in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office is available 24 hours a
day.
