Attorney General Mike DeWine
Former Chief
sentenced for Rape of a Child
(COLUMBUS, Ohio)—Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine announced that a
former police chief was sentenced today to life with parole possibility
after 25 years for the rape of a child, in addition to several other
charges. Larry Casey is also required to register for the rest of his
life as a sex offender.
A Clinton County jury on Jan. 8, 2016, found Casey, 48, guilty of one
count of rape of a child under 13, two counts of sexual battery, one
count of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, and one count of failing
to register as a sex offender. The sentences for the charges in
addition to rape will run concurrently.
The sexual abuse in this case happened in part during the time he was
police chief of Newtonsville in 2009, but did not come to light until
recently.
“These are unspeakable crimes,” said Attorney General DeWine. “With the
assistance of local law enforcement, we will continue to pursue
predators who abuse children.”
Casey was also convicted on Nov. 29, 2010, of the sexual abuse of a
different child. He was given probation in that case but required to
register as a sex offender and was decertified as a police officer in
the State of Ohio as a result of that conviction. The Attorney
General’s Office was not involved in that prosecution. Casey was in a
position of trust to both children, but Casey did not meet them as a
direct result of his police work.
The Attorney General’s Office Special Prosecutions Section prosecuted
this case at the request of the Clinton County Prosecutor’s Office. The
case was investigated by the Wilmington Police Department, the Clinton
County Sheriff’s Office, the Clinton County Department of Jobs and
Family Services, and the Blanchester Police Department.
“We appreciate the hard work the Attorney General’s Office did in
prosecuting this case,” said Wilmington Police Chief Duane Weyand. “I’d
also like to highlight the effort of Detective Robert Wilson of our
department in this investigation.”
