Edison State
Earns Statewide Award for Career Preparedness
Columbus, OH – Edison State Community College was named the recipient
of the Career Preparedness Award during the ACT State Award Ceremony on
January 26, 2016, in Columbus, Ohio.
The award ceremony concluded the fourth annual ACT College and Career
Readiness Campaign, which celebrates exemplary employers, community
colleges, high schools, and high school seniors who promote readiness
for college and career in states across the country.
Edison State’s selection was based upon student success indicators,
including retention, graduation, and four-year college transfer rates;
the strength of relationships with local employers and high schools;
accessibility of career readiness assessments and preparation programs;
and a support structure in place for students, especially those from
underserved populations.
“This award not only validates the efforts of Edison State to
focus our students on career outcomes, but also highlights our success
in leveraging the resources of our educational and community partners,”
said Edison State President, Dr. Doreen Larson.
“Our students have access to online tools, face to face counseling, and
connections to Ohio Means Jobs to name just a few of the components of
our career-focused approach.”
Edison State has developed robust relationships with local employers to
provide students with training and education needed to enter the
regional workforce. Partner companies include Emerson Climate
Technologies, FRAM Air Filters, Abbott Nutrition, KTH Parts Industries,
Inc., and Midmark Corporation to name a few. The newest partnership
called “EPIC,” announced in 2015 with Honda North America, Inc.,
provides educational and training opportunities to prepare the next
generation workforce for high-tech positions in the manufacturing
industry. It offers scholarships as well as a work-study program.
Additionally, Edison State’s campus-wide service-learning program
integrates academic study with non-profit organizations, often
resulting in employment opportunities. Partner companies include Miami
County Hospice, Troy Community Works, and Partners in Hope.
In addition to working with area employers, Edison State’s College
Credit Plus program partners with over 40 high schools, translating to
one of the highest high school students to total enrollment ratio
percentages in the state at over 30%. Participation in this program
increased by over 50% from the previous academic year.
“Community college students come from a wide variety of backgrounds,
including College Credit Plus high school students, traditional, and
non-traditional students. Many are working while managing education and
family responsibilities,” added Edison State Director of Student
Success, Pamela Gibellino.
All students at Edison State have access to a customized Holland Career
assessment and a second, more in-depth assessment, “Type Focus,” to
help them determine or validate a career choice and match them to
programs offered at the college or a four-year transfer school.
Students are also required to complete a Student Education Plan (SEP),
which provides an individualized road map for the student’s program of
study. To help facilitate the plan, each student is assigned an advisor
who provides support throughout his or her program of study.
“Our Success Advisors are all cross-trained in career advising and
provide a holistic approach to establish a Student Education Plan,
resources and education pathways that support career goals and student
success,” added Gibellino.
Edison State will go on to participate in the national competition and
culmination of the program at the National Gala on College and Career
Readiness in June 2016 in Washington, D.C.
