Ohio's Start
Talking! Program
Governor and Mrs. Kasich have requested we distribute information
containing tools and information to help spur and sustain conversations
about drug abuse with our children, grandchildren, and children we
might teach or mentor in some way.
For those interested in more information and resources, including a
link to sign up for bi-weekly email tips, please visit Start Talking!
Why Start Talking! was created
Start Talking! is a new effort championed by Gov. Kasich and First Lady
Karen W. Kasich aimed at preventing drug abuse among Ohio’s most
vulnerable citizens – our children. The majority of substance-free
adolescents credit parents for the decision not to use illegal
substances. Likewise, teachers and other authority figures can have a
similar influence on youth and their decision-making.
Parents, grandparents, mentors and peers can make a difference just by
talking to young people about drug abuse. The Start Talking! initiative
was developed to:
• Help parents understand the risks to their children and empower them
with simple, effective strategies to act;
• Provide programming for schools to reinforce positive messages;
• Encourage peer-to-peer conversations among youth to promote healthy
lifestyles; and
• Focus on building resiliency in our youth so that they have the
necessary emotional tools to resist substance use.
