Closings, delays based upon conditions in
the District
GREENVILLE – “It’s not a matter of how it looks in town,” said
Greenville City Schools Superintendent Doug Fries. “It’s the whole
school district.” Residents with children in the district have
sometimes questioned the reason for school closings and/or delays. The
district not only includes the city of Greenville, but goes as far
south as Wayne Lakes, east to Gettysburg, west nearly to Union City and
north close to Ansonia.
“I drive the roads every morning,” Fries added. Fog and road conditions
determine his decision on a closing or delay. “Fog is a factor in the
ability of buses to make a turn on roads… I look for clearance, at
least two telephone poles.” He added that buses “stop and start, stop
and start… they’re picking kids up.
