Ohio Department of Education
Draft Revised
Standards in ELA and Math Available for Review and Comment
7/8/2016
The Ohio Department of Education opened an online survey today allowing
individuals and groups to comment on proposed changes to Ohio’s
Learning Standards in English language arts and mathematics.
The survey is part of an effort that began in February to improve and
update the standards, which are statements describing the skills and
knowledge a student should have at each grade level. The deadline for
survey feedback is Aug. 1.
“Thank you to everyone who weighed in during the initial stages of this
review,” said Paolo DeMaria, superintendent of public instruction.
“This feedback contributed to the strong draft that we are posting
today. Continued involvement from educators and parents ultimately will
help ensure that the revised standards accurately reflect the
improvements requested earlier this year.”
The proposed English language arts and mathematics standards revisions
originated with public comments made during a six-week survey that
began Feb. 24. Advisory committees of education leaders for each set of
standards reviewed more than 1,000 comments from the survey and
determined which standards to revise. Educator working groups then
proposed the draft revisions under an advisory committee’s oversight.
Based on the original survey feedback, the committees and working
groups primarily clarified text in certain places and made it more
understandable to the grade level of students for which a standard is
intended. The department will address some comments in Ohio’s Model
Curricula documents, which more fully describe the standards and help
local educators make choices about how to teach them.
In early August, the advisory committees will review comments from the
current survey and refer to the working groups any further revisions
needed. The State Board of Education and Senate and House education
committees will receive the proposed standards revisions in September,
and the approval process is expected to conclude this December. This
fall, the department also will begin the review process for science,
social studies and financial literacy standards.
