Darke County Parks
Nature Day a
Success
Darke County Parks annual Nature Day event took place on Saturday April
23rd to the delight of all ages. During the cool morning, adults
enjoyed a Warbler hike and a wildflower hike took place in the early
afternoon, children experienced many different earth related activities
throughout the day from planting trees to visiting with the animal
ambassadors and from dissecting owl pellets to pretending with sticks.
If they completed all eleven stations, earning a stamp in their “nature
passport” each time, they received a special outdoor related prize.
Young and young at heart sang along with Chris Rowlands, the naturalist
musician who entertained during lunch time. The Friends of the Darke
County Parks had a great lunch of hotdogs, chips, fruit, and drinks
available for a small donation.
Throughout the day over 160 people enjoyed the trails, treats, and
tranquility at Shawnee Prairie Preserve. The cool spring air and the
warm April sun proved the perfect combination for a fun day out
celebrating the earth. Naturalist Mandy Martin commented that, “The
children and adults were really engaged in trying to identify the
fossils at the dig station.” Both Martin and Kathi McQueen, naturalist
and volunteer coordinator, mentioned the immense amount of creativity
exhibited at the fairy garden station. Many parents thought their
children could have spent hours constructing homes for gnomes and
fairies under the shelter of the may apple flowers.
Next year’s Nature Day celebration will take place on April 22nd, 2017,
Earth Day. For more information about Darke County Parks or any of the
