Darke County Scholarship Fund
Helping a
student achieve college goals
DARKE COUNTY – The cost of a year’s college education in Ohio can range
from $15,000 to $25,000 or more, according to Gary Young, Fundraising
Chairman for the Darke County Scholarship Fund (DCSF), formerly the
Senior Scribes Scholarship Fund.
“Even if students take advantage of the current College Credit Plus
options while in high school, work part-time while going to school and
qualify for college grants, they can still face tens of thousands of
dollars in debt by the time they graduate,” Young added. “Our goal is
to try to help them keep that debt down as much as possible.”
While DCSF recently awarded $8,000 in scholarships to students from a
number of school districts in the county, bringing its total
scholarships to nearly $67,000 since 2009, some deserving students
couldn’t be helped due to limited funds. In addition to donations and
County News Online sponsorships, a long-range option is available that
could easily benefit more students in the future.
Young said bequests could be that option for many Darke County
residents. “There are three types,” he said. “The specific bequest,
residual bequest and contingent bequest.”
The specific bequest allows a person to designate a specific amount,
percentage or property to DCSF.
The residual bequest allows someone’s estate to pay all debts, taxes,
expenses and specific bequests. The remaining amount would be
transferred to DCSF.
Finally, the contingent bequest would ask that DCSF receive all or a
portion of the estate under certain circumstances. An example would be
childless couples, with no close family members, who could designate
their entire estate, or portion thereof, be transferred to DCSF.
“Darke County Scholarship Fund is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization,”
Young said. “Our goal is to help our young people achieve their college
dreams and this is one way to do it.” He cautioned, however, those
interested should be sure to consult their attorneys.
