Greenville City Schools
Family Night a complete success

The numbers aren’t in yet, but students, parents and friends started arriving a little after five and continued heavily for more than an hour and a half. Estimates were close to 2,000 children and adults picked up summer reading books, ate hot dogs and chips and enjoyed great entertainment.

The students had signed up for the Kids Read Now program and on May 12, 5-7 p.m., they picked up their first three books. Each week over the summer they read one book in order to earn the next one. Books will be sent directly to them at home. The program is for students entering kindergarten in the fall, as well as current kindergarteners, first and second graders.

On hand for the event were Woodland and District staff, including Principal Jody Harter, Assistant Principal Jennifer Statzer, Greenville Superintendent Douglas Fries, and Assistant Superintendent Laura Bemus. Helping out were Greenville Police Chief Dennis Butts, Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) and the Woodland PTA. The District thanks local businesses: Dairy Barn, Rural King, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, Walmart, Dairy King, Pizza Hut, Hallmark, Darke County YMCA, Greenville’s City Park, Eikenberry’s IGA for their donations to make this event possible for the children in Greenville.
