Attorney General Mike DeWine
DeWine Issues
Statement on Surgeon General's Report on Alcohol, Drugs and Health
(COLUMBUS, Ohio)—Today Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine offered the
following comment on the U.S. Surgeon General's report on addiction in
the United States. It can be attributed, all or in part, to
Attorney General DeWine.
"We are facing an unprecedented epidemic of opiate addiction in
Ohio. It touches every corner of our state and every demographic.
I am pleased and encouraged that the U.S. Surgeon General has issued
this first ever report on substance abuse and related disorders and I
hope it has the same impact that Surgeon General's Report on Smoking
had fifty years ago.
"I have said consistently that we need to shift how our culture thinks
about and approaches this problem, and the report reflects this.
In addition, the importance of community involvement mentioned in the
report is something that my office has supported throughout Ohio.
"It is also absolutely critical that we work to prevent kids from ever
trying alcohol or drugs and this report confirms it. We will be sharing
the information in the report with the members of the Ohio Joint Study
Committee on Drug Use Prevention which I convened to formulate
recommendations for age-appropriate drug prevention education in Ohio
schools. The Committee will be issuing a report by the end of
2016.
"The information in this report will be a helpful tool to help us in
our continuing efforts to fight the destructive opiate epidemic."
