OFRW Holds Spring
Conference and Board Meeting
‘Make Ohio Safe Again’ theme for GOP Women
SOUTH EUCLID, OHIO – Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine headlined the
presentations for the Ohio Federation of Republican Women’s (OFRW) 2017
Spring Conference. The theme of the Conference was, “Make Ohio Safe
Again”. Also addressing the group were: Ohio GOP Chairman Jane
Timken, Ohio Senator Frank LaRose (R-27), Ohio Representative Dorothy
Pelanda (R-86), Cuyahoga County GOP Chairman Rob Frost, National
Federation of Republican Women’s (NFRW) District Eight Director
Ann Schockett, and West Virginia Federation of Republican Women’s
(WVFRW) Vice President Carol Kalwa Pickron.
Lyn Bliss of Greenville, and the President of the Ohio Federation of
Republican was in attendance. She acted as emcee and chaired both the
OFRW Board of Directors Meeting and the General Membership Meeting.
Two workshops were held supporting the theme of the Conference.
ALICE (active shooter training: “Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter,
Evacuate”) was presented by Toni Jones from the Cleveland State
University Police. Republican National Committee Event Control and
Action was presented by Trooper Robert J. Simone of the Ohio State
Patrol.
DeWine was introduced by OFRW First Vice President Janet Kushlan and
gave a detailed description of the steps Ohio has taken in helping
streamline the investigative process in Ohio. Also covered was an
overview of the programs in progress that will aid in fighting
addiction problems.
DeWine’s wife Fran, a member of the OFRW, entertained the group with
the story of the couple’s meeting. She gave a short presentation of the
project the DeWine’s sponsor to aid the poor and disadvantaged in Haiti.
Jane Timken, Chairman of the Ohio Republican Party, also an OFRW
member, was introduced by OFRW President Bliss. Timken detailed
achievements of the Party and future plans. She spoke of the important
role women play in today’s political world.
NFRW District Eight Director Ann Schockett explained the obstacles and
pitfalls women face in becoming political candidates – and the great
rewards for success.
Introduced by OFRW Membership Chairman Cindy Bias, Ohio Senator Frank
LaRose and Ohio Representative Dorothy Pelanda each presented Ohio
legislative updates from their respective legislative bodies.
Republican Party of Cuyahoga County Chairman Rob Frost welcomed the
group to Cuyahoga County while giving an update on the status of the
County Party.
WVFRW Vice President Carol Kalwa Pickron related activities being
carried out by the WVFRW to increase membership by attracting the
younger professional woman.
The OFRW welcomed five new clubs to the Federation: Champaign County
Republican Women’s Club, Federated Republican Women of Summit County,
Portage County Republican Women’s Club, Tenth District Republican
Women’s Club and Union County Republican Women’s Club.
Additionally, the OFRW presented the Diamond Award for club achievement
during the 2016 membership year to: Beavercreek Republican Women’s
Club, Canfield Republican Women’s Club, Morrow County Republican
Women’s Club and the Richland County Republican Women’s Club.
Ottawa County Republican Women’s Club was presented the Gold Award. The
Silver Award was given to Wood County Republican Women’s Club and the
Bronze Award to the Westark Republican Women’s Club.
“Our OFRW membership participated at an unprecedented level, and
reports regarding the quality of the event from those attending have
been exceedingly positive,” stated Bliss.
The OFRW, founded in 1929, is a statewide organization of hundreds of
members in constituent clubs. It is the largest, most powerful
political organization in Ohio providing the avenue for women to
influence policy, develop candidates, and elect the leaders of Ohio.
The OFRW is a multi-generational, multi-cultural organization providing
the structure and support for political activists to learn, engage, and
