State Senator Bill Beagle
House Approves Deaf
History Month Bill, Beagle honored
COLUMBUS - On Tuesday, leaders from the Ohio Speech and Hearing
Government Affairs Coalition named State Senator Bill Beagle (R-Tipp
City) the 2017 Legislator of the Year in recognition of Senate Bill 27
and his efforts to increase awareness of individuals living with speech
and hearing difficulties.
"I'm both honored and humbled to receive this distinction from such a
remarkable community of speech and hearing advocates and
professionals," said Beagle. "We have much to be proud of this week,
and I look forward to continuing our efforts on behalf of Ohioans
living with speech and hearing challenges."
Responsible for monitoring and providing timely input on state policies
impacting the speech and hearing profession, the Ohio Speech and
Hearing Government Affairs Coalition presented the award during a
special ceremony held at the Ohio Statehouse.
Senate Bill 27, which was sponsored by Senator Beagle and approved by
the Senate in March, would designate March 13 through April 15 as "Ohio
Deaf History Month" in an effort to raise awareness for deaf history
and culture throughout Ohio. On Wednesday, lawmakers in the House of
Representatives subsequently put their stamp of approval on his bill,
which will now proceed to the governor to be signed into law.
“I commend my colleagues in the Senate and the House for joining me in
raising awareness for deaf history and culture throughout Ohio,” said
Beagle, sponsor of Senate Bill 27. “This celebrates the remarkable
progress made by the deaf community over the last 200 years.”
Ohio Deaf History Month's beginning date of March 13 commemorates the
date Dr. I. Jordan King was elected as the first deaf president of
Gallaudet University, a school for the deaf and hard of hearing in
1988. The ending date of April 15th recognizes the establishment of our
nation's first permanent school for the deaf in 1817.
