Awareness Week kicks
off with Majority Awareness Walk
Nearly 200 students and community members gathered on Broadway to
attend the 2nd Annual Majority Awareness Walk on April 2nd.
Despite the cold and snow, students stepped out to show their
commitment to a drug-free future and to spread the message that
according to Prevention Action Alliance, a MAJORITY of teens are drug
and alcohol free and are paving the way to a bright future.
In attendance were community members who have a role in
supporting youth wellness. Those who spoke included Kelly
Harrison, adult leader of the WATM Program and Cynthia Wion, Executive
Director of Recovery and Wellness. Each were on hand to explain
the WATM Program as well as mental health and treatment programs
available for individuals in need of services in our community.
Other community members were invited to speak to the youth including
Mayor Willman, Chief Deputy Whittaker, and Sharon Deschambeau of
Coalition for a Healthy Darke County. Each shared a positive
message and the belief in our students to help be the change to reduce
drug abuse in Darke County. Greenville City Fire Department,
Police Department, and City of Greenville were present to manage
traffic and provide food and snacks donated by Whirlpool and
Healthy Coalition of Darke County.
Student leaders spoke to the crowd to encourage attendees to follow
prevention strategies in our community, reasons why they make the
choice to be drug/alcohol free, and what they enjoy most about being a
part of this impactful program. WATM youth speakers
included Grace Coakley and Will Coomer of Greenville High School, Micah
Ayette of Tri-Village, Autumn Dicke, Eli Flanery and Emma Tutwiler of
Greenville Middle School and Reece Addington, Addie Fine, Kaden
Harrison, Grady Looker, Callee Moore and Libby Harter all of Greenville
Primary School.
Recovery and Wellness would like to thank those who attended the event
and all sponsors in support of our Darke County youth. Per Mayor
Willman, April 1st-April 7th is officially declared Majority Awareness
Week! Kelly Harrison stated “It was great to see so many people
come together to make this event a reality for our
students”. “There are many driven, dedicated students eager
to be the change and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for each
of them”. For more information about WATM please contact Kelly
