Darke County Sheriff
Motorcycle accident
on SR 571; two-car accident on SR 118
On August 8, 2018 at approximately 6:19 am, Darke County Deputies along
with Greenville Township Fire and Rescue were dispatched to the
intersection of State Route 571 & Jaysville St Johns Rd on an
injury accident. CareFlight was called but could not fly due to
extreme fog.
Preliminary investigation revealed a 2002 Jeep Liberty operated by
Joseph York (53) of Greenville, was traveling south on Jaysville St
Johns Rd. The Jeep Liberty left the stop sign and pulled into the path
of a westbound 2001 Harley Davidson Motorcycle, operated by Gary
Higgins (57) of Greenville. The Jeep Liberty was struck on the left
side by the 2001 Harley Davidson motorcycle. Mr. Higgins was ejected
from the motorcycle.
Mr. Higgins was transported to Wayne Healthcare by Greenville Rescue
and later transferred to Miami Valley Hospital where he is listed in
Critical condition. Mr. York was treated and released at the
scene. Mr. Higgins was not wearing a helmet at the time of the
accident.
The Darke County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction team was also
called to the accident scene for further investigation.
This accident remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s
Office.
Injury accident on S.R. 118
On August 10, 2018 at approximately 6:47AM Darke County Deputies along
with Greenville Township Fire & Rescue responded to the
intersection of State Route 118 and Horatio-Harris Creek Road on a
report of an injury crash.
Preliminary investigation revealed a Silver 2000 Honda Accord driven by
Paige Neargarder 21, of Union City, Ohio was traveling Westbound on
Horatio-Harris Creek Road and stopped at the intersection of State
Route 118, and then pulled into the intersection in front of a Silver
2012 Nissan Sentra driven by Devin Billenstein 31, of New Weston who
was traveling Southbound on State Route 118. Billenstein had to
be mechanically extricated from his vehicle. Both drivers were
transported to Wayne HealthCare for non-life threatening
injuries.
This accident remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff's
Office.
