On the morning of April 2nd, We are the Majority held their 2nd annual
Majority Awareness walk. About 200 people from all over Darke County
marched downtown in Greenville for a drug-free community.
We are the Majority is a youth-led group, led by 7th through 12th
graders. Greenville and Tri-Village have We are the Majority groups
through their schools. Elementary students are also part of these We
are the Majority groups.
At the event there were many tents with information about the Recovery
and Wellness Centers in Greenville and surrounding areas. Cynthia
Wion spoke about the Recovery and Wellness center and all its services.
These services include counseling, education, youth counseling, and
other services.
There were many speakers at the walk. Grace Coakley, one of the teen
leaders read a proclamation that was signed by the Greenville Mayor
Steve Willman, declaring the week Majority Awareness Week. Many teen
leaders spoke about being drug-free and making positive choices. Young
elementary members of We are the Majority said why they like being a
part of the group.
The Chief Deputy Sheriff of Darke County, Mark Whittaker, also spoke.
He predicts that if we rid our county of substance abuse, our county
jail will not be full, and crime will go down by more than one half. He
said that being healthy is not just about your body, but it also
involves your mind. He said that as young people making positive
choices we should spread the positive attitudes.
