Dream comes true for Arcanum graduate at steer sale
First time steer exhibitor gets Reserve Grand Champion
By Brandy Lewis
GREENVILLE- Showing the Grand Champion Steer at the Darke County Fair
has always been a dream for 18 year old and Arcanum graduate Carved
Gostomsky.
A 10 year member of the Darke County 4-H Beef Club, Gostomsky has shown
cattle all 10 years. His Crossbred steer weighed in at 1,365 pounds and
was shown in the heavyweight division. The award winning steer was fed
Rowe`s Grain and hay along with plenty of fresh water.
"The perfect steer will be market ready, and completely sound
structure," Gostomsky said. "It was exciting to win Grand Champion
Steer."
The steer sold for $7,710 and Gostomsky plans to use the money to buy
next years steer.
His advice to other 4-H'ers is simple.
"Don't get discouraged about not winning your class or division.
There's always another year."
Gostomsky was a graduate of MVCTC in heavy equipment and will have one
more year left in 4-H.
"Success tasted sweet."
The competition should be on their toes next year.
Colby Manning, a 16 year old junior at Mississinawa Valley, was showing
his first ever steer when he won Reserve Grand Champion.
He has been in Livestock in General 4-H Club for nine years and showed
cattle for eight of them. This year, something changed and he had the
opportunity to take a steer and he jumped on it.
Manning explains," the judges look for overall stoutness of the steer
and how much covering of fat it has."
"I didn't expect to win reserve at first" added Manning. "It felt good
and my hard work had finally paid off. It made me feel good."
Manning's steer sold for $5,000 and he also plans to use the money to
buy next years steer.
His advice to younger 4-H members, "work hard on your livestock and
never give up on them."
Manning is vice president of his 4-H Club and plays football when he's
not showing steers.
Now the bug has bitten him; there is no stopping where this 4-H'er can
go.
