Ten year old Versailles student has Grand Champion Holstein cow
By Brandy Lewis
GREENVILLE-Cale Henry, a 10 year old student at Versailles, had the
Champion Holstein at this years Darke County Fair and was helped with
his project by his dad and grandfather.
He brought seven heifers and cows to the fair this year. The sky's the
limit with this young 4-H exhibitor as he also took five cows to the
Ohio State Fair.
His advice to someone looking to show champion Holsteins, "work with
your cow everyday."
When asked what's the benefit of working with your cow everyday, he
replied, "It gets them ready for the fair,"
His parents, Charlie and Beth Henry, are very supportive and proud of
their son and his achievements. His mother Beth added, "he has a couple
of siblings that will be showing soon. They will have to choose which
cow to show."
Henry's Holstein sold for $3,000.
What really makes this Holstein so special is its bloodlines.
Gypsy, a two year old Holstein, produces about 95 lbs of milk a day.
Her mother currently holds the state record of all breeds of dairy cows
producing 63,000 lbs. of milk in a year. Gypsy weighs around 1650 lbs
and her mother weighed in at 2350 pounds. So she has a long way to go
to catch up with her mom and see if she can beat the record.
This is Henry’s second year in 4-H and is getting a great start.
When this 5th grade Versailles student isn't milking cows, he's playing
football, soccer and he wrestles.
Hope to see more of you in the future Cale.
