Tri-Village sixth grader takes top honors in Junior High Individual
GREENVILLE - Mekedes Butsch, 10-year-old sixth grader from Tri-Village,
took top honors Friday in the Junior High Individual event of the Great
Darke County Fair Cheerleading Competition. This was her third year of
competition, and the second year she has taken first place.
“It’s a lot of work,” she said, grinning. “Two or three months, two or
three times a week, two or three hours at a time…” That’s in the
neighborhood of about 60 hours preparation for a 3-minute performance.
Top move? “That’s my heel stretch,” she said. It’s also the way she closed her performance.
At the age of 10, she already knew what her future plans were. “I plan
to be an orthodontist… and I thought about both UCLA (University of
California Los Angeles) and OSU (The Ohio State University).” OSU won
out. “Closer to home,” she said. She also hopes to continue cheering
while in college.
Mekedes sides with others involved in competition cheering… it is a sport. “It’s lots of hard work,” she said.
