Edison State Student-Athletes Earn Conference Honors
Recently finishing out the season with a district tournament
appearance, six Edison State Community College basketball players have
been named recipients of post-season awards from the Ohio Community
College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) for the 2018-19 season.
Representing the women’s team, Sarah Pothast, of Wapakoneta, has been
named Freshman of the Year, First Team All-Conference, All-Freshman
Team, and the Division II All-District Team. Pothast, a 6-foot-1-inch
freshman forward, averaged 16.6 points per game, 7 rebounds, and 1.3
blocks per game in conference action.
“Sarah Pothast had a great freshmen season,” said Edison State Head
Women’s Basketball Coach Tim McMahon. “She led the team with 16.6
points per game and shot a tremendous 86-percent from the free throw
line.”
Clair Schmitmeyer, of Versailles, has been named to the First Team
All-Conference and the Division-II All-District Team. Schmitmeyer, a
5-foot-7-inch sophomore guard, averaged 14.6 points per game, 8.4
rebounds, and 2.9 steals per game in conference play.
“Clair finished a tremendous career at Edison State by being named
First-Team All-OCCAC and the Division-II All-District Team. She led the
team in rebounding and steals,” added McMahon.
Kailani Broyles, of Massillon, has been named to the All-Conference
Honorable Mention Team. Broyles, a 5-foot-6-inch sophomore guard,
averaged 14 points, 2.9 assists, and 2.7 steals per game in conference
action.
“Kailani was a great on-court leader for the Chargers this season,”
said McMahon.
Kennadie Reese was also named All-Conference Honorable Mention and
All-Defensive Team. Reese, a 5-foot-5-inch freshman guard from Jackson
Center, made 33-percent of her field goal attempts, pulled down 5.5
rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game in conference action.
“Kennadie was the floor leader. She led the team playing 31 minutes per
game and had a great assist to turnover ratio of 3:2. She was able to
shut down many opponents’ top scorers on defense this season and is
looking forward to another great year next season,” said McMahon.
On the men’s team, freshman Lacey Watson, of Rock Island, IL, has been
named First Team All-Conference–Player of the Year second runner-up,
All-Defensive Team, All-Freshman Team, and Division-II All-District
Team. Watson, a 6-foot-5-inch guard/forward combo, averaged 23.9
points, 9.5 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game in conference action.
“Lacey is a talented basketball player,” said Edison State Head Men’s
Basketball Coach Kyle Vanover. “He did a good job of balancing his
individual accolades with the team’s success throughout the season. He
stayed humble and matured as a basketball player which is one of the
reasons why he’s receiving these awards.”
Adding to the list of team laurels, Lamine Komara, of Columbus, has
been named to the All-OCCAC Honorable Mention Team. Komara, a
6-foot-5-inch freshman forward contributed 14.4 points, 4.6 rebounds,
and 1.6 assists per game in conference action.
“Lamine played the most minutes on our team this season because he was
able to stay healthy, stay focused, and continue to work. When he first
came in he was raw, but has since been able to grow into a dominant
basketball player,” added Vanover.
“We’re looking forward to having both Lacey and Lamine returning next
season with even bigger years.”
The women’s and men’s basketball teams had record-high number of wins
for the college, both finishing with a 25-6 overall record and 12-4 in
the OCCAC.
Both men’s and women’s teams finished the season at 25-6 record. For
