Vernon J. Winner
Mr. Vernon J. Winner, age 90 of Versailles, Ohio passed away on
Saturday April 23, 2011 at 5:25 PM at the Versailles Health Care
Center, Versailles, Ohio. He was born January 16, 1921 north of
Sidney, Ohio, the son of the late Herman and Loretta (Luthman)
Winner. He was raised in McCartysville and then spent his adult
life in Versailles. He was a Seaman 1st Class in the United
States Coast Guard.
He was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church, Versailles, Ohio, member
of the Versailles K. of C., member of the Versailles Eagles and
American Legion, he was a Distributor and Server for Mass at St. Denis,
Former President of VDA, past Chairman of Poultry Days, Past President
of Versailles Industrial Park, operated various businesses and
restaurants in the area such as: the former Chick Inn
Restaurant, in the 50’s along with Bill Bohman owned and operated
Frenchies Restaurant in Versailles, owned the Tastee Freeze in
Versailles & Piqua, formerly owned Del-Win Lanes (Bowling Lanes),
in the 70’s he was personnel Manager for Argosy manufacturing in
Versailles & later managed Frenchies & Versailles Hotel for
Carl Subler.
He is preceded in death by his parents; Wife: Dorothy F. (Kremer)
Winner on June 21 1999 whom he married April 11, 1945; Grandson: Brett
A. Oliver; Granddaughter: Michelle (Shelly) Buxton; Brother:
Ernest Winner; Sisters: Treva McKim, Mary Ann Schmitmeyer.
He is survived by his sons & daughters in law: Larry &
Cheryl Winner of Dublin, Ohio, J.D. (John) & Julie Winner of Troy,
Ohio, Michael & Ann Winner of Cincinnati, Ohio; daughters &
sons in law: Beverly & Robert Mayer of Lawrenceville, GA.,
Jean & David Buxton of Versailles, Ohio, Kay & James Poeppleman
of Versailles, Ohio, LouAnn Lowe of Raleigh, N.C., Renee & Steve
Miller of Richmond, Indiana; 32 grandchildren; 15 Great grandchildren;
sisters & brothers in law: Louise “Lou” & Purcell
Grilliot of Versailles, Ohio, Betty & Don Nutt of Vandalia, Ohio;
numerous nieces & nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 AM on Thursday April 28,
2011 at St. Denis Catholic Church 14 E. Wood Street, Versailles, Ohio
with Rev. Fr. David Vincent-Celebrant. Burial will follow in St.
Valbert Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 4:00 to 8:00
PM on Wednesday April 27, 2011 and from 9:00 to 10:00 AM on Thursday at
Bailey Zechar Funeral Home, Versailles, Ohio. Veterans Graveside
services will be conducted by the Versailles Veterans Honor
Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to the Versailles Life
Squad.
