Onda Fae Matthews
Onda Fae Matthews was born on April 30, 1920, in Woodington, Ohio, to
Charles Sydney and Nellie Rae Davis Hopper.
She passed away Sunday evening, June 5, 2011 at the Oakley House with
family and friends at her side.
Onda is survived by her husband of 71 years Robert Eugene Matthews,
daughter Shirley Aldridge Hoff and husband Fred, and son Robert Eugene
Matthews, Jr., sisters, Ellen Peters and husband Paul, Patricia
Potkotter and husband Ralph, Myrna Detling and husband the late Dwight
Detling, and Carol Hart and husband James.
Preceding her in death are her son Larry Ray Matthews, brother Robert
Eugene Hopper, and son-in-law Milton Dale Aldridge.
She has seven grandchildren, Jennifer Aldridge Bozone, Rachael
Aldridge, Gretchen Aldridge Morfea, Carrie Matthews Trader, Aaron
Matthews, Jannelle Matthews Gannon, and Melinda Matthews Isaacson.
Great grandchildren are Chelsea and Emmalea Bozone; Nicolas and
Christopher Morfea; Rhianna, Hope, Isabelle, Erin, and Ryeece Trader;
and Rae Ann Gannon.
While growing up Onda was active in the Darke County Guernsey 4-H Club,
cattle judging, and she attended Versailles High School where she
played in the band.
She was active in the lives of her children as a Brownie and Girl Scout
Leader, Den Mother, and 4-H activities. She and her children enjoyed
spending lazy summer days in the summer at the Greenville City Swimming
pool in the park in the “50’s”.
She enjoyed camping and traveling extensively with her husband, camping
at the Great Darke County Fair every year since 1970, working at the
Grand Stand, and supporting her children’s 4-H activities. Onda and Bob
have been selected as the 2011 Great Darke County Fair Grand Marshals.
Community activities found her busy attending all functions of the
Senior Citizens, dining out with their camping clubs, enjoying Masonic
and Shriner’s activities with her husband.
Down through the years she was also active in the Treaty City White
Shrine, Order of the Eastern Star, and the P.T.A. while also supporting
the Demolay Boys and Rainbow Girls. During her life after kids, she
found time to work at General Athletic Products for several years.
She attended Fort Jefferson United Methodist Church.
Friends may visit the family on Friday, June 10, 2011 from 4:00PM-8:00
PM. Her service is on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 10:30 AM at
Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville with Pastor Doug baker
officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenville Township Memorial
Gardens with a dinner following at Fort Jefferson United Methodist
Church.
Donations may be made to Fort Jefferson United Methodist Church in lieu
of flowers.
