Blickenstaff
Physician, author, artist, actor, humanitarian… friend to many
Delbert David Blickenstaff, 92, passed away February 26, 2014, at the
Brethren Retirement Community in Greenville, Ohio. His life’s
work was being a medical doctor in family practice in Versailles and in
Greenville at Family Health. Delbert had the ability to visualize
what needed to be done and also the ability to carry it through.
With two other people he started Family Health in the early
1970’s. In 1969 he arranged for fathers to be present in the
delivery room at Wayne Hospital. In 1976 he started the dinner
theater program at Oakland Church of the Brethren, and over the years
he enjoyed acting and directing plays and musicals with several
community theater groups. More recently he worked with a group to
form the Senior Scribes and has written many stories that have been
published in the newspaper.
Delbert was the son of the late Lloyd and Marie Blickenstaff.
Delbert’s wife since 1944 is Louise Rust Blickenstaff. Their four
children are Theron Blickenstaff, M.D. (wife Susan Bland, M.D.),
JoEllen Zerkle (husband Curt Zerkle), Jeff Blickenstaff, M.D. (wife
Debora Blickenstaff), and Jonathon Blickenstaff (wife Angela
Denov). They have fourteen grandchildren and thirteen great
grandchildren. Delbert had a twin brother and a younger brother
who are deceased and has a living sister. There are many nieces
and nephews.
Delbert graduated from Manchester University in 1947 and University of
Oregon Medical School in 1956. During World War II he was in
Civilian Public Service.
The memorial service will be held at Oakland Church of the Brethren on
Monday, March 24, at 2:00 P.M. Memorials may be sent to the
Brethren Retirement Community, Oakland Church of the Brethren, or State
of the Heart Hospice.
For Delbert’s last gift, he gave his body to Wright State University
Medical School.
