Virgil Max Shoemaker
Virgil Max Shoemaker, age 92 of Greenville, Ohio and husband of the
late Nancy June Shoemaker passed away at 1:30 PM Saturday, September
19, 2015 at Wayne Hospital State of the Heart Hospice.
Virgil Max was born April 3rd 1923 in Bryant, Indiana and the son of
the late Ed and Mary (Smith) Shoemaker.
Max graduated from Bryant High School (valedictorian) and received a BS
from Purdue University in Electrical Engineering. He went on to
serve in World War II and the Korean Conflict reaching the rank of 1st
Lieutenant, United States Marine Corps. Upon graduation from
Purdue University, he worked as head of Test Engineering Navel Gunfire
Control at General Electric, Pittsfield, MA. for 2 years. In
1949, Max began a long career for Greenville Manufacturing (division of
American Aggregate Corporation) from which he retired as General
Manager after 39 years.
Max was involved in his community and served on various boards and
committees of the Greenville Public Schools, First United Methodist
Church, and the YMCA building fund drive. He taught youth and adult
Sunday school, belonged to Kiwanis and was an Explorer Post
Leader. Max’s first priority was family but also loved
church, golf, boating, and travel.
In addition to his parents, Max was preceded in death by his wife of 67
years, Nancy June, his son Mark A. Shoemaker (Red Lion, PA), brothers
Donald Shoemaker (Portland, IN) and John Shoemaker (Dunkirk, IN).
He is survived by 2 sons and 3 daughters-in-law; Mark (deceased) and
Mary Shoemaker of Red Lion, PA; David and Roxie Shoemaker of Loveland,
OH and John and Patricia Shoemaker of Nashville, IN. Surviving
also are 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, September 24,
2015, at the First United Methodist Church, 202 West Fourth Street
Greenville, Ohio, with Pastor Angela Meeks officiating. Burial
will follow at the Greenville Cemetery with Military graveside services
conducted by the Greenville Veteran’s Honor Guard. The family
will receive friends Wednesday, September 23, 2015, from 5:00 P.M.
until 8:00 P.M. at the Zechar-Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio and
Thursday one hour prior to the services at the church.
It is the wish of the family that Memorial Contributions be given to
the State of the Heart Hospice of Darke County.
