Magoto
Florence (Hoblit) Magoto, age 94, departed this life on Saturday, May
28, 2016 at 9:08 AM at Village Green Nursing Home. She was born
June 6, 1921 in Greenville, Ohio, to the late Glenn R. and Gertrude
(Townsend) Hoblit. She was the oldest of 10 children.
In 1940 she married Marion J. Magoto. They had one son Terry who
died October 30, 1991. Her husband Marion died November 29,
1993. In addition to her parents, husband and son she was
preceded in death by her brothers Bill, Donald, G.R., Jim and Fred and
sister Patty Lou.
Florence was a 1939 graduate of Greenville High School, a member of the
first Girl Scout Troop of Greenville and was retired from the Antique
Business after 33 years with her last location known as the Red Barn
Antique Shop in Greenville.
Her membership includes the Darke County Genealogical Society, the
Pioneer Family of Darke County, and the Daughters of American
Revolution and was a Past Regent of the DAR, the Naval Airship Assoc.,
the Darke County Nature Center and the Treaty Bicentennial
Commission. She designed a mug and plate for the Treaty
Bicentennial.
She donated the Lansdowne Memorial Monument (located on the grounds of
the Garst Museum) and the Lansdowne Mural found in downtown
Greenville. She was also responsible for getting the Birthplace
of Zachary Lansdowne home on East Third Street placed on the National
Historical Registry and having a sign placed at the corner of East
Third and Locust Streets. She also donated a flag pole and a
memorial stone at the old original cemetery at Abbottsville, also a
flag pole and memorial stone at the old Pioneer Cemetery at Ft.
Jefferson.
In doing research on the old Water Street Cemetery, she and a good
friend Bea Campbell had the cemetery book updated on our early settlers
and had the book reprinted with the added information. After 10
years of work, she was successful in retrieving many of the original
stones from the cemetery and had them placed back in a Memorial
Wall. She and Don Asman donated the flag pole found at the
cemetery. On each Memorial Day she put flags in metal holders in
memory of the soldiers buried in the Water Street Cemetery.
Recently she came across a stone that had been missing for 159 years,
having it replaced behind the stone wall in the cemetery. She
also has donated numerous items to the Garst Museum as well as the
local Library.
On February 6, 2002 she received the “Community Service Award” from the
DAV and in 2006 was the recipient of the “Garst Heritage Award” from
the Darke County Historical Society. She had also received a
special award from the grandchildren of Zachary Lansdowne in 2005 at
Ava, Ohio. She had been instrumental in keeping the GHS Class of
1939 together for monthly luncheons.
In 1933 she and 5 of her brothers and sisters were baptized at the
Presbyterian Church by Rev. Ralph Jennings. She loved good music,
particularly the Big Band sound, flowers, travel, having a good time
and history of Greenville and Darke County.
Florence is survived by her sibling John D. & Bobbie Lou Hoblit of
McBain, MI, Mary Ann (Hoblit) Preger of Greenville, and Nancy (Hoblit)
& John J. Auer of Columbus, OH; dear friend and caregiver Brent
Henninger of Arcanum, Ohio; as well as numerous nieces and
nephews.
There will be a services will be held Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at 3:00
PM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home Greenville, Ohio. Burial will
follow in the Abbottsville Cemetery. The family will receive
friends one hour prior to the services on Wednesday at the funeral home.
It was the wishes of Florence that Memorial Contributions be given to
Meals on Wheels.
