Are
you raising a future president of
the USA?
By Marybeth Hicks
August 26, 2011
Remember
when your parents asked you
what you were going to be when you grew up? Nearly every child in
America at
one time or another answered, “I’m going to be President of the United
States!”
I
was thinking about this recently
because I wonder if kids do that anymore — that is, dream of being the
president or of running for office. Some surveys I’ve seen indicate
they’d
rather be sports stars or celebrities that hold high political office
or be the
leader of a large successful company.
But
our nation needs children who grow
up believing that entrepreneurship and pubic service (as opposed to
political
careers) are worthy aspirations.
And
no matter what our own political
beliefs may be, I’m confident that all of us in the Family Events
community
want our children to grow up as virtuous, upright citizens who
understand and
cherish the values on which our nation was founded.
I’m
so concerned about this issue that
I’ve written a book about it. Don’t Let the Kids Drink the Kool-Aid was
released this week and offers up a startling look at the next
generation, along
with a call to action for parents, grandparents and concerned citizens
to
instill in our children civic virtues that will carry our nation
forward.
No
matter what our political point of
view, I think all Americans are concerned about the hyper-sexual
culture, the
eroding faith among our young people, and the general sense that we’ve
lost our
way from the traditional values that make us an exceptional country.
My
new book is intended to strengthen
our resolve to raise a generation that is ready to tackle the serious
issues of
their day (many of which they will wish we hadn’t left them!).
Each
week, Family Events offers up a
small dose of encouragement so that families like yours can confront
the
cultural challenges that concern you. The book is more of that, along
with lots
to think about as we ask ourselves how we got where we are today.
Hope
you’ll check it out — and thanks
for letting me use my message this week to tell you about the book.
Thanks
for reading and sharing Family
Events!
Take
good care until next week,
Marybeth
This
week’s question: How are you
instilling civic virtue in your children? Are the schools and media
helping or
hurting your efforts to do this? Share your thoughts on our Family
