Common Sense Solutions
That’s My Opinion
By Bob Robinson
Jan. 21, 2011
Well, Obamacare has finally been “dumped” by the U.S. House of
Representatives. This august body moved pretty fast. They postponed
dealing with it for a week due to the attack on U.S. Rep Gabrielle
Giffords, and they’ve only been in session for three weeks.
By the way, Rep. Giffords is due to leave the hospital today, less than
two weeks after being shot in the head! Who says God doesn’t have a
strange way of working through His children? Unbelievable.
I wish her well, as I’m sure we all do.
Anyway, back to Obamacare.
The Reps said it would be one of the first items of business they would
address, and it was. It remains to be seen what will happen when the
bill goes to the Senate… anybody want to take a shot at it?
You get three guesses and the first two don’t count.
If by some miracle it gets through the Senate, anybody want to guess
what will happen when it reaches the president’s desk?
Yeah, right.
While it isn’t likely, I firmly believe that a repeal is the only way
to go. One reader disagrees with me. He says it should be “fixed.”
While his points are definitely worth considering, my question is why
try to fix a monstrosity when there are really only a few things that
the people – including me – want addressed?
Can you imagine the number of “fixes” that would be necessary to repeal
this 2,000-page document that damages – if not destroys – our rights as
citizens of the United States of America? Can you imagine the size of
the final document when they finally get it finished?
They’d have to build a new wing in the Library of Congress.
Then there are the fixes they might miss… after all, even today I would
question how many of our illustrious readers have read it from start to
finish. I’d be surprised if I needed more than the fingers on one hand
to count them.
Nope. Let’s ditch this disaster and start over.
For starters, let’s address an unchecked private sector that dumps
people because they get sick; and puts limits on their coverage.
Let’s address a system where all insurance companies have to join a
pool to cover pre-existing conditions (probably to be funded by
taxpayer dollars, unfortunately, unless someone much wiser than me can
come up with a better option that still protects the private market).
Let’s address stupid regulations that require or allow insurance to
cover doctor and hospital visits for contraceptives and Viagra
prescriptions.
Let’s address insane laws that won’t let insurance companies cross
state lines to build their client base in a competitive market.
Let’s give taxpayers an option to set aside tax-free funds for
non-emergency and non-critical office visits, generic drugs and
wellness checkups.
Let’s look closely at why the cost of medical care is growing so much
faster than that of every other sector of our economy. I’ll bet we
would discover that government mandates and bureaucracy are at the
heart of it.
Let’s put a clamp on medical malpractice lawsuits that are putting
honest, capable physicians out of business and set up some common-sense
solutions to deal with the crackpots that are giving the medical
profession a bad name…
There are more insane laws and lack of oversight that helped create
this mess, but I’m out of breath. Besides, I think you get the message.
The American people wanted the politicians to put something together
that will not allow insurance companies to destroy families and
livelihoods if someone was unfortunate enough to get really sick. They
asked our public servants to get skyrocketing costs under control. They
did not ask for a government takeover of one-third of our economy.
The free market system is not perfect, but throughout history it has
proven to be the only system that comes close to allowing us our
God-given rights as free people.
For those who have forgotten the Declaration of Independence and the
Preamble to the Constitution, notice I said “God-given.”
We are a free people living in the greatest nation in history, not
sheep to be led by mandate and directive by those who think they know
better than we do.
We put faith in our government to keep those in power – both public and
private – from restricting and/or taking away the freedoms that our
forefathers, through God, gave us.
There are common-sense solutions to health care. I’ve listed a few of
what I believe are the more important ones… it took a little over 200
words.
We elected our public servants to find those solutions and enact them.
If they won’t, then we’ll elect a batch that will.
That’s my opinion. What’s yours?
