State Senator Bill Beagle...
The Importance of
Being a Good Dad

Senate restores funding for the Ohio Commission on Fatherhood
As we celebrate Fathers’ Day, I thought I would take this opportunity
to share some thoughts on the value of the fine fathers in our
community. Often a challenge and always a blessing, the role of father
is what I am most proud of in life. As a father of three, I am quite
familiar with the many hats one must wear in order to be a good dad.
The list of words used to describe fathers is endless but highlighted
by ones like nurturer, provider, confidant, and friend.
The positive impact a ‘good’ father can have on a child’s life is
immeasurable. A multitude of studies illustrate that children
experience better outcomes in life when the father is actively in
engaged in the parenting process. Seemingly everything that we do as a
parent plays a part in turning our children into the men and women they
are to eventually become.
Since coming to the Ohio Senate in January of this year, I have had the
pleasure of serving on the Ohio Commission on Fatherhood with several
others who also value the roles that fathers play in our lives.
Established in 1999, the bipartisan commission has helped in addressing
‘father absence’ in Ohio for more than a decade. The commission’s
efforts include making recommendations on policy, funding various
fatherhood programs, and encouraging education and action in our many
communities. Clearly, I was pleased to see that my Senate colleagues
had preserved funding in its recent budget bill so that the commission
can continue its good work over the next two years.
Again, I hope that everyone can join me in expressing thanks for our
fathers and all of the selfless work they do for us. As both your state
senator and a member of Ohio’s Commission on Fatherhood, I look forward
on continuing to advocate on behalf of Ohio’s families for several
years to come.
