It’s been too long...
Nice to be back
By George Starks
When I was forced away from the Darke County sports scene two years
ago, it was a hard pill to swallow.
When I moved to Penn State country, I really thought I would only be
coming back in a box. I was missing the kids and the coaches, not to
mention my three grandchildren, now four. That goes without saying.
When I showed up at Eldora Speedway Sunday with my grandson Dylan, I
got a very nice surprise. Yes, I raised a few eyebrows at being in my
power chair but the reception was overwhelming. There were many smiles
and hugs and a few tears, some of them mine, but I was welcomed and it
felt good.
In places like Tri-Village and Greenville, many have asked about my
physical condition and it showed me they cared. That felt good.
The biggest thing is being back in the local sports scene. As a native
of this county, I was always big into local sports. I never really knew
how much I would miss it until it was gone and I was away from it.
I realize now the reason I was in Pennsylvania was to get the proper
diagnosis. It took me a long time to accept it and it’s been narrowed
down from Primary Lateral Sclerosis to Mills Syndrome. I still struggle
with the disability and even get angry at times but I know this is the
hand that has been dealt to me and I will have to live with it
regardless.
However, it’s great to be back and doing what I love… sports.
I am glad to help Bob Robinson out as much as I can and who knows,
someone might jump on the sports bandwagon and contribute to the sports
section. That would be nice. I can only do one event a day right now,
two when hoops season comes along.
So when you see me at a game of some sort, say hello if you see me as I
might not see you. I have missed everyone that I was in contact with
and I look forward to seeing everyone again.
Bottom line: it’s good to be home.
