It’s All About the
Kids
That’s My Opinion
By Bob Robinson
Introducing “The Flying
Eagle” from East School
As more and more educators and young people discover County News
Online, they are seeing opportunities to showcase the talents of future
generations.
How many of you knew that East School Fourth Graders had their own
newspaper? I didn’t. Not only do they have a school newspaper, they are
making it available to Darke County CNO readers beginning Monday.
Since its inception County News Online has been viewed as a fundraising
opportunity for the Senior Scribes Scholarship Fund. It has been
successful with more than $5,000 in scholarship funds raised in barely
a year. Click here to find out how you can help us continue
these efforts.
As with all ideas, CNO has evolved. The concept was simple. Provide an
added source of news, opinion and information to Darke County readers
and create a fundraising arm to help Darke County students manage their
college expenses.
To be successful, we knew we had to keep the format easy to follow and
maintain a policy of traditional journalism principles. For instance,
we love opinions as long as the person expressing them is willing to
take responsibility for them. Topic areas are easy to navigate with our
tabs across the top, and at the top right of each page.
It has worked. Readers have embraced us with continued growth every
month since last January.
One of our primary goals was to provide an unlimited forum for young
people – our Teen Scribes – to showcase their talents. Many have taken
advantage of it.
Since then we’ve had articles published by Edison students, and have
recently provided a forum for Greenville High School’s IMTV program to
publish its own web site.
Our offerings continue to grow.
Soon, you’ll be able to follow the adventures of a 2010 Greenville High
School graduate, Courtney De Schepper, on her trip around the world –
which she has dubbed the Vicarious Voyage Project. Courtney will be
visiting 11 different countries and will report on them as her time
permits.
Beginning Monday, we will be offering the student-written and produced
“The Flying Eagle,” a publication of East School Fourth Graders. Since
we are trying to keep navigation as simple as possible – and expect
continuous growth in this area – we are changing the Teen Scribes tab
to the Youth tab… when you click on it, you will get the Teen Scribes
option and The Flying Eagle option.
This leaves opportunities for every school district in Darke County –
at all grade levels – to participate. County News Online would like to
extend the invitation to each of them… click here to
find out how your students can get involved.
We hope our readers will embrace these offerings by our young people.
When something is posted, check it out. Let the students and their
teachers know you have read and appreciate their efforts. The more
support our young people get from their communities the stronger we
will be as they take leadership roles in our county.
You’ve heard me say it before, and I’ll keep saying it as long as I’m
able…
It’s all about the kids.
That’s My Opinion. What’s Yours?
