Job
Growth
Continues to Reshape Western Ohio
Ohio’s
economic comeback showed no sign of slowing down in recent months as
our state
added a total of 38,000 new jobs between May and June.
In the past year, companies have added more
than 100,000 jobs in Ohio and have played a vital role in our
unemployment
level dropping to its lowest point since September 2008. In fact, for the first
time since January
1995, Ohio’s unemployment rate (7.2 percent) is a full point below the
national
rate (8.2 percent). Clearly,
our jobs
initiatives are providing hard-working residents and job creators
opportunities
that make us the number one job creator in the Midwest.
Much of
this work can be seen in communities throughout Western Ohio. In our area alone, more
than 3,100 new jobs
have been added since the start of last year.
Paramount to our workforce development efforts
has been JobsOhio, the private
job-creating engine that was established through the passage of top
priority
legislation early last year. Fixed
on
attracting business and creating new opportunities for Ohioans,
JobsOhio has
played a role in 11 area projects that have helped create 825 new jobs
for
local residents, while also retaining nearly 3,000 existing positions. These JobsOhio projects
have also been
accompanied by an astounding $188 million in capital investment.
Similar
success stories are being told in all regions across the state, and the
rest of
the country is taking notice. Ohio
is
ranked second in job creation in the nation. It remains critical that
we
continue building on this momentum, driving Ohio forward. State and local officials
must continue to
work together in identifying innovative new ways to highlight the
talents of
Ohio’s workforce and attract job creators from out-of-state. With five months left in
the 129th General
Assembly, there remains no goal more important to legislators than that
of
continuing to get our residents back to work.
While so much progress has been made, there is
still a great deal of
work to be done and I look forward to leading this ongoing effort.
