When Children Were Children
Girls looked like
girls and boys were gentlemen
By Sharon Hopper
In my youth not only were children free to exercise their daydreams,
but you could certainly tell girls from boys. It was so simple. We had
play pants for outdoor recreation, but in school and all other
functions girls wore skirts or dresses and boys wore pants; mostly
jeans, but clean up was a pair of casual pants and a front button down
shirt.
Now I have to honestly say that this was a nice idea but at times it
could be rather awkward. I remember the day of the circle skirt of
dress and underneath would be “20” layers of netting to make it stick
out. It was called a (crenel an).
Oh it was flattering as long as one stood on their feet, but sometimes;
especially when they were new and a girl sat down her skirt would stay
up. It was awkward to say the least. And one did not want to bend over
because the back would hike up. That was worse than sitting. How does
one go to school without sitting? Now it was that or a pencil thin
skirt halfway to the ankle with a large slit in the back so one could
walk, which I preferred for school. My point is that girls looked and
dressed like girls and boys were young gentlemen.
I remember one night a group of us got together and piled into a car
and went roller skating. Like I said if you could stay on your feet the
full fluffy skirts were just great, but if you are on roller skates and
not the greatest skater you could easily end up on the floor in a very
awkward situation. Unfortunately I was not the greatest skater. But we
seemed kinder than the kids today. Everybody laughed and then they
would help you up, dust you off, and help you get started again. I did
end up being quite good at staying upright.
When I look back those days were flattering to all the kids. We really
tried to be our best most of the time. Style came and went just like
today, but good manners were there to stay. Remember the DA Haircut?
Wow the teachers had a ball with that one.
