funding from the Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge

Strengthening the Delivery of Elementary and Secondary Education
Supports the METRICS Act, which would enable State Educational
Agencies and local districts to better analyze student achievement and growth
Cosponsor of the DIPLOMA Act, which calls for a comprehensive
approach to education that would enable states and school districts to close
the achievement gap
Investing in Safe, Healthy Learning Environments
Introduced the Fix America’s Schools (FAST) Act, which would
provide funds to improve and modernize school buildings – creating jobs while
ensuring that all students can learn in a world-class school
Cosponsored the Safe Schools Improvement Act and the Student
Nondiscrimination Act to help prevent school bullying, promote school safety,
and encourage positive school learning environments
Held four anti-bullying workshops in Ohio in collaboration with
the U.S. Attorney’s Office and U.S. Department of Education
Connecting Ohio’s College Presidents
Hosts an annual bipartisan College Presidents Conference in
Washington, DC to bring together presidents of Ohio’s 2-year, 4-year, public,
and private institutions of higher education
Promoting College Affordability
Led the Senate fight to ensure federal subsidized Stafford loan
interest rates did not double from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent in July 2012
Cosponsored the Know Before you Owe Act of 2012, which would
require schools to discuss various loan programs with their students to ensure
they are aware of federal loans prior to taking out expensive private loans
Author of the Student Loan Simplification Act which makes it
easier for students to manage and repay student loan debt
Opposes cuts to critical federal aid, loan, and tax credit programs
including the Pell Grant and American Opportunity Tax Credit
Aligning Career Training with Industry Needs
Champion of career training and adult education programs that
promote long-term economic growth in Ohio
Introduced the SECTORS Act which would support partnerships
between industries, colleges, and labor groups to develop plans for high-growth
sectors, such as biosciences, advanced manufacturing, and shale development
Introduced the Youth Corps Act to enable states and local
communities to better connect at-risk youth with education, the workplace, and
their communities.
