Take the Easy Way Out
By The Darke Knight
Whoa!! If you are reading this, it means I finally got to Editor Bob.
I’ve been reading “his” site for the past year and haven’t seen him
mention one single word about all the columns I’ve sent him that he has
refused to publish.
Too edgy, he said. Or he doesn’t want County News Online embroiled in a
lawsuit. Or I’ve crossed the line. Or whatever!!
Well maybe it’s damn well time for someone to cross the line and get
edgy! And maybe speak what everyone is thinking… stuff that for some
reason E-Bob has stopped saying!
I had to make a major concession, though. I will remain The Darke
Knight… how am I supposed to hear (or overhear) information if people
know who they are talking to… but I’ve agreed to let him publish my
contact information. My email address is below for anyone interested.
I’ve been watching the shenanigans going on in this county AND in the
city AND in the schools AND in the villages – not to mention in Ohio
and Washington - for nearly half a century. As long as I can get past
E-Bob’s black marker I’ll get to those later.
Right now it’s about the conventions. Both of them. RNC and DNC.
Have you ever seen so much BS in two 3-day events in your lives? Oh…
you say you didn’t bother? Yeah, a few people have said that to me. My
question is always “didn’t bother what?” Watching the lies at the
conventions or watching the lies on TV?
Romney was responsible for the death of a cancer patient. Give me a
break! Democrats call the Republican attack on Medicare, welfare and
the government role in job creation a “Tripod of Lies.” I’m not sure
those ARE lies, but let’s give them the benefit of the doubt for the
moment.
For those who didn’t watch the conventions let me tell you some of
those speeches almost had me in tears. Such beautiful people, our
president and president wannabe. Maybe they should be nominated for
sainthood.
I don’t know about you but I don’t particularly want a “saint” in the
Oval Office. A decent set of personal values will suffice. What I DO
want in office is someone who will tell us what direction he wants to
take us and then, if we choose him, have the strength to force those
idiots on Capitol Hill to do the people’s bidding.
Both teams are absolutely right about one thing… one thing only: We
have a choice of two totally different directions to choose from, both
promising to get us out of the mess we are in.
One direction is dependence. One direction is independence.
The Democrats talk about job creation being a partnership, but when you
look at it realistically, it means more government involvement. More
government means more taxes and control. But it also means your “ride”
through this life could be a little easier. All you have to do is learn
how to adapt and enjoy life on a little less money with a few more
restrictions.
Or maybe a whole lot less. And more. It’s been tried before and it
hasn’t worked. But I have to say it for that side; they are passionate
and they firmly believe that they have the answer to Utopia. Give them
a little more time and they’ll get it right.
The Republicans talk about more freedom to determine your own destiny…
jobs, wealth, personal pursuits. If they were smart, they would repeat
the following words a few times…
“We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect
union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the
common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings
of liberty to ourselves and our posterity…”
Maybe a ton of times. For those of you scratching your heads, it’s the
Preamble to The Constitution of the United States of America.
Establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common
defense…? I believe both sides shoot for that. Both sides meet with
limited success because those who actually have to “do” it are people.
Not institutions. Not pieces of paper.
It’s the “promote the general welfare” and “secure the blessings of
liberty” parts that distinctly divide the two parties.
The Democrats seem to think that it is government’s responsibility to
PROVIDE the general welfare and PROVIDE the blessings of liberty
through government programs and intervention. More like a babysitting
or caretaking role, if you get my meaning.
The Republicans seem to think that it is government’s responsibility to
assure the OPPORTUNITY that can promote the general welfare and the
OPPORTUNITY to secure the blessings of liberty. More like a “we have
educated you, you have grown up, now it’s time to go out into the big
bad world and make your own way” role, if you get my meaning.
I kind of think the latter is what the founders had in mind when they
wrote the Constitution (maybe without the “we have educated you” part),
but the concept has been diluted over the centuries.
Today, more than half of our loyal citizens are on some kind of
government support. Bet you didn’t know that, did you? In the last
presidential election, nearly two out of five (39 percent) of eligible
voters didn’t even bother to vote. Did you know that?
So the real question is, will you “bother” to vote? If so, which way?
Considering the choices, what path do you think those who actually vote
will take in November? The hard way out (personal responsibility) or
the easy way out (let the government take care of it).
I’m guessing that we’ll take the easy way out. We’ve been moving in
that direction so long I’m not sure we even know how to do things the
hard way anymore.
Prove me wrong.
