Life with Levi
No, no and… no
By Amanda Rodeheffer-Olson

So I knew it was coming, but I still wasn’t quite prepared for it.
Ok, I was flat-out dreading it, but the time has come…
NO!
The work above is the only word in the English language that my son
likes to use on a regular basis. Even when it’s not the word he’s
looking for… He uses it anyway.
He worked up to it slowly, but over the past couple of weeks, he’s been
abusing that two-letter word that Mommy now despises above all else.
It started out by him just telling us ‘no’ when he didn’t want to do
something that we wanted him to do, like listen.
But it quickly escalated to bouts of screaming, “No! No! No! No! No!”
every time we tried to get him to do anything, like getting his diaper
changed, or getting dressed.
The other night it was time to change into pajamas at bedtime, and Levi
decided it would be cool to say ‘no’ the entire time that he was being
undressed, and re-dressed.
He quickly learned that his newest method of trying to get his way was
not going to work with Mommy. All I have to do is give him my Mommy
look when he gets on a roll, and he stops lest he be put in time-out
for the fiftieth time since Saturday.
But I try not to take it to heart. Because I know that he really
doesn’t mean it.
Literally.
The other night, Daddy asked Levi if he was ready for bed (since he’d
been rubbing his eyes for over half an hour).
Levi said no.
So Mommy asked him if he was sure he wasn’t ready for bed.
Levi said no.
Then Daddy asked him if he could say anything other than no.
And once again, Levi said no.
Even today, he ran to the refrigerator, which generally means that he
wants milk. So I asked him if he wanted milk.
Again, the answer was no.
So I got out the milk, and Levi grinned. So I asked him again if he
wanted milk.
He giggled, pointed at the milk, and said no.
Yeah, that’s what I thought.
Don’t get me wrong though… My little boy is very smart. Sometimes
almost too smart for his own good.
He can say the important words… Daddy, Mommy, cookie.
He also says ‘GO!’ a lot. And it’s not just ‘go’… It’s GO!
Every time we pull up to a stop sign or a stoplight in the car, Levi’s
instant reply is, “GO! GO! GO!”
Oh, and Mommy’s personal favorite, gocklewots. (This is Levi-ish for
socks)
I’m beginning to think that my kid speaks Minion (the language that the
little yellow guys from the movie Despicable Me speak). He sure seems
to understand exactly what the minions are talking about every time we
watch that movie.
Which here lately has been three or four times a day.
At this point, he can speak Yiddish as far as Mommy cares as long as he
stops saying the word ‘no’.
As long as the Yiddish word for ‘no’ isn’t ‘no’.
