Key to our success:
Youth, Family & Community
By Bob Robinson
An Editor’s Perspective: Sports photos, Letters to Santa, Student
Accomplishments & More
County News Online was “conceived” as a fundraising project for the
Senior Scribes Scholarship Fund. Net proceeds from CNO are used to
provide scholarships to help our young people reach their college goals.
We’ve made no bones about the fact that our purpose is unique… our goal
is not to compete with other information sources – as a volunteer
entity, it would be foolish to think we could – it is rather to look at
a different approach to providing information to Darke County and the
surrounding Miami Valley.
We try to offer news and perspective that is not readily available
elsewhere and that we feel would be important to our community. This
includes information that, in my humble opinion, provides some balance
on the state and national scene to what is being provided in other
media outlets. Any time differing points of view are offered, we
publish them for our readers.
But even that is not what we are about. That’s just “window dressing.”
We are about the ‘building blocks’ of our future… youth, family,
community.
County News Online, very shortly, in fact in the next couple of days,
will reach two million page views. I firmly believe that our focus on
our young people, families and local communities has been the key to
that success.
One of our most popular information categories, ever since CNO Sports
Editor George Starks has come aboard, has been his coverage of local
sports.
Five days ago we offered a new opportunity for CNO readers… high
resolution prep sports photos – pics of our student athletes in action
– that they could receive in return for nominal donations. In the short
time the page has been available it has received well over 5,000 ‘page
views.’
In return for their donations, readers can receive photo files suitable
for printing at 8x10 or 8-1/2 x 11 sizes. Where available, readers can
also request the game stories that go with the photos. Several have
already done so. All requests are delivered in the universal formats of
jpg or pdf.
The site is updated weekly to include the latest photos from various
sporting events that are covered by Starks and CNO Sports Photographer,
Dylan Knoop. The process of updating the page is time-consuming. County
News Online requests that you take advantage of the opportunity to
insure its continued success. See a photo, or two, or a set that you
would like? Make a donation and get your own printable high resolution
photos and game stories.
You will have a lasting memory of a student athlete’s performance, and
help a local teen reach his or her college goals.
CNO’s Letters to Santa achieved the same great success. Three of the
site’s top five stories in December were in the Letters to Santa &
More tab. One young lady, Kalista King, has been writing weekly columns
about her journey with Christ. Three of those articles were in our top
100 stories (out of 4,500) for 2012. Where possible, the
accomplishments of local youth, such as the Greenville High School Key
Club, are offered to CNO readers. They are always well-received. Family
events – the Great Darke County Fair, Annie Oakley Days, Gathering at
Garst, Versailles Poultry Days, Beggars Night and much, much more – are
consistently high among reader preference, typically dominating the top
five articles for the month in which they were published.
County News Online is now introducing a section that we believe will be
another area of interest to CNO readers: Student Projects, Papers &
Accomplishments. This section will focus exclusively on the efforts and
accomplishments of local students at all levels… Kindergarten through
college. Currently, CNO is providing Edison Communications 121 student
research papers on a variety of topics – from communication’s role in
today’s society through its impact on events in history.
Want to know how AA got started, or how Hitler achieved his notoriety
or even the role of communication in paranormal studies and social
media? You’ll find the results of Edison student research on these and
other topics over the next few months.
