Musings
of a Senior Scribe
Of
One Accord
By Mona Lease
Hi,
all!! I hope you are all enjoying the
cooler weather. Maybe I can catch up on my spring cleaning before it
turns into
fall cleaning - YUK!
It
is again time for another school levy. Signs
are everywhere - Vote Yes - Vote No. Letters are in the local papers.
To whom
do you listen? Who has the truth? Where could you possible find the
"real
deal?" Thoughts swirled in my brain.
From
my East Elementary School days - the Three
Little Pigs story appeared. Remember - the house of bricks was the one
that
outlasted the "wolf's best tactics?" And - if people make a house a
home - how would that apply to a school? If it's true that a "good
church" is one where the congregation actually practices what the
preacher
says - would that work with the school's required studies - telling the
kiddies
to be good to one another, and that other people have rights and
feelings?
Greenville High School required reading is Harper Lee's "To Kill a
Mockingbird."
In this book, a southern town got so much in trouble with crime,
racism,
schools, etc. - they had to pull together to survive. During the
"finding
out whom to trust" - they found that most people were not what they
thought.
Lastly
- I took a look at the Gettysburg
School. This intrigues me. Gettysburg was K-12 grade. In roughly 1972 -
Gettysburg consolidated with Greenville and became part of the
Greenville
School System.. Greenville School System sold Gettysburg and North
Schools in
2007? Gettysburg bought back the school in 2012. - I believe. I invite
you to
take a look at Gettysburg School. Someone has maintained this building.
Look at
the bricks. I did not see anything needing repairs. Look at the
pavement. I saw
where it had been repaired - but it is a superb job - I had to look for
the
seams. Probably, a bunch of "someones" have worked together. The
grass has always been mown. Maybe someone does this and does not get
paid -
I'll probably never know that.
And,
I'll share this last though with you ...it's
kind of a "two-fer." Our Daily Advocate is sent to Indianapolis,
Indiana on a daily basis. I am not sure how many counties our Early
Bird now
covers. Working on the point that our local schools are stopping people
from
coming to Greenville and Darke County at large (that was a big "levy
point" a couple of levies back) - the readers are "on the outside
looking in" and reading our newly elected Commissioner Stegall arguing
in
print with citizen/business man Don Wright.
And,
to the Sandy Hook incident. Victoria Soto
and Kaitlin Roig, that we know - hid students when the gunman opened
fire.
Victoria died - but not in vain. When the "wolf" appears where I am -
I'd like to believe that the building does not matter - brick or glass
&
steel - I'd like to believe we'd work together. Should we practice this
before
the real trouble starts? And, how close is the "wolf?"
Remember
the kiddies and our service people. Be
good to the furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy.
See ya
next time. Ever Toodles!! MONA
