A day to honor
By George Starks
Today, we will celebrate our Day of Independence.
The day a lot of people declared our freedom from England.
Many people, over the years, have served and died to keep this a free
nation.
Even though we do not have the same freedoms we once had (in my
opinion).
Today many of us will celebrate in different ways.
We will have cook-outs and be with friends and family.
Weather permitting, the kids will play in pools and when the sun goes
down a fireworks display somewhere.
As for me, it looks like a trip to New Madison for that.
The problem I have is for many, it’s just another reason to drink and
get drunk, even though there are several that don’t need a reason to do
this.
Because of this, many will lose their lives because of the selfishness
of others who chose to drink and drive.
This is a sad and tragic fact of our life today.
Over the course of the past 48 hours, many people have thanked me for
my service to my country, having served in the Navy, National Guard and
the Army Reserves.
Please, let’s keep things in perspective.
Serving my country was an honor and I am glad to have done it.
But before you thank a veteran for helping to keep or independence,
first you should Thank God.
Yes, I said God.
When our forefathers signed our Declaration of Independence, they
sighted God on that day as being the reason for everything.
It was God, not government that provided the funds for our country to
have the weapons and the means to keep our troops supplied and fed so
our freedoms could be enjoyed, even today.
While our moms and dads were making the babies, it was God that had
already planned the destiny for those children to become the Soldiers,
Sailors, Airmen and Marines that fought and died for the preservation
of this country.
So before you crack the top on that beer or take the first bite of food
on this day of celebration, or light that firecracker, please take just
30 seconds to give thanks to the only one that made this a free country.
God!
