U.S. Representative Boehner
More Ohioans Share
Their ObamaCare Stories
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester)
released the following column discussing the negative effect the
president’s health care law is having on families:
“In 2009, while trying to sell the public on his health care law,
President Obama made a promise: ‘If you like your health care plan, you
can keep your health care plan. Period.’
“It was simple. It was catchy. And the president used it
again and again. At least thirty-six times over four years he
repeated it in one form or another.
“The only problem? It wasn’t true.
“NBC News recently reported the Obama administration has known ‘for at
least three years’ that this was coming. That’s because, in 2010,
the administration crafted regulations in a way that practically
guaranteed Americans would be forced to buy a new, Washington-approved
plans even if they wanted to keep their current plan, and often at a
higher cost.
“Republicans warned that the president’s promise wouldn’t hold up, but
the White House wasn’t fazed. It boldly threatened to veto a
measure offered by Sen. Mike Enzi (R-WY) to ensure that the president’s
‘most famous’ promise was upheld – all while the president laughed off
suggestions that his plan would result in higher prices, lost jobs and
dropped coverage.
“Reality has quickly come crashing down. In our area and across
the country, millions of cancellation notices are hitting mailboxes
because of the train wreck that is the president’s health care law.
“I used this column a few weeks ago to highlight several of the notes
I’ve receive from people like Ed in Hamilton, who has been told that
his plan is being cancelled and new coverage will cost $500 more per
month. I also encouraged others to share their stories with me by
submitting a message online at JohnBoehner.house.gov/contact, or
calling my office at 1-800-582-1001.
“Since then, hundreds more here in Ohio’s Eighth Congressional District
have reached out to talk about their experiences. Most are
struggling with problems that go far beyond the broken website.
“‘My health insurance premiums increased 12% back in April, and will
increase again in December by another 10%,’ says Richard in
Springfield. ‘I am then told that in 2014, my policy will be cancelled
and replaced with hone that will cost twice as much, along with a
higher deductible.’
“Bonita in Medway writes that she has lost her job ‘thanks to
ObamaCare’ mandates. ‘My company permanently laid off about 15
people, to have them replaced with part-timers and temps…’ she adds.
“I’ll be sharing more of these stories as we prepare to vote in the
House on our ‘Keep Your Health Plan Act’ – a bill that gives the
president another opportunity to honor his promise. This is just
our latest effort to protect Americans from this broken law and, at the
very least, provide some basic fairness.
“Because it’s not right that mandates on big businesses and insurance
companies have been delayed by the president, while families are being
forced off plans they like and need. Even unions and others have
received exemptions from the law.
“‘If you like your plan, you’ll be able to keep your health care
plan.’ That was President Obama’s promise to the American
people. I hope he won’t pass on this opportunity to join with us
to make things right.”
