Promoting
Adult Education and Success in the Workforce
According
to the National Assessment of Adult Literacy reports, some 90,000,000
adults do not possess the basic skills – literacy, numeracy, and
command over the English language – needed for success at home and
the workplace. And while our nation’s unemployment rate last month
was 7.3 percent, it was 3.5 percent for individuals with a bachelor’s
degree and 11.3 percent for those without a high school diploma.
This
week – National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week – is
time to raise awareness about these discrepancies and promote adult
education opportunities.
A
report from Georgetown University estimates that 63 percent of
employment opportunities will require some postsecondary education by
2018, yet the majority of states are unable immediately assist
individuals who want to participate in adult education programs to
due to waiting lists.
To
reverse this trend, Sen. Brown is proud to be a cosponsor of the
Adult Education and Economic Growth Act to strengthen adult education
programs across the nation. The bill would increase funds designated
to adult education programs under the Workforce Investment Act;
improve technology use in programs; bolster services for English as
second language learners and individuals with learning disabilities;
and provide tax incentives for businesses that enable employees to
pursue adult education training.
Sen.
Brown supports a resolution recognizing National Adult Education and
Family Literacy Week and will continue fighting to ensure that all
adults have access to the resources they need to advance their
education and succeed in the workforce.
Sincerely,
Sherrod
Brown
