A
Miraculous Accident
By Jana Kolling
As you know, there has yet to be a definitive answer as to how
people came to be. Evolutionists point to science books and
creationists point to the bible. Intelligent scholars on both
sides believe they’re right, and neither can fully prove their
position.
As a business major, taking biology was the last thing I wanted to
do. But I’ve never forgotten the chapters about human
cells. Now I know most people don’t want to read about this, and
I’ll try not to be boring. But when you’re debating the origins
of life, you have to consider this basic unit of living matter.
The membrane surrounds the cell, separating and protecting it.
Inside the membrane are molecules that pump other molecules in and out
of the cell. Membranes also have receptors that allow the cell to
detect signaling molecules, like hormones. A cytoskeleton
maintains the cell’s shape and holds the insides in place.
Organelles specialize in functions, such as heart or kidneys.
The nucleus houses the chromosomes, where DNA replication
happens. It has a double nucleus around it, which protects DNA
during processing. DNA gets copied into special RNA, which is
transported out of the nucleus.
Mitochondria and chloroplasts generate the power by harvesting energy
from food. The endoplasmic reticulum is the transport network for
molecules with certain destinations, as compared to the ones that float
around freely. And lysosomes digest the excess and worn-out organelles
and bacteria/viruses.
Peroxisomes are destructive enzymes that rid the cells of toxic
peroxides, which are naturally secured in a membrane-bound
system. And golgi finishes, sorts and ships out the cell’s
products.
Some cells need to move, like responding to a cut or cancer
metastasis. Flagella and cilia allow cells to “swim” in these
cases. Vacuoles do the general maintenance of the cell.
This really just scratches the surface of what goes on inside a cell,
and keep in mind humans have about 100 trillion cells. I worked a
factory for years, and it’s plain to see that cells are doing exactly
what GM does. They use raw materials and labor, convert it into
finished goods, ship it out, and remove the waste. All the
components are there: managers, workers, logistics, admin, maintenance,
quality control/repair and customers.
And so we have the obvious question. Where’d the first cell come
from? In 1665 cell theory was developed by Robert Hooke. It
states that all cells come from preexisting cells. Well we can see
that, so we’re back to the chicken and the egg question.
Wikipedia provides several theories, such as meteorites carrying cells
to Earth or created by deep-sea vents. Being synthesized by
lightening in a reducing atmosphere is another theory. It’s
believed the early cells were simpler and evolved, and scientists don’t
know what the first self-replicating molecule was. The
possibilities to explain this includes fusion sex, prokaryotic sex and
lateral gene transfer.
Creationism versus evolution is the final result; with some believing
the two co-exist. Christians naturally have the simple answer,
which requires faith to believe. Evolutionists have a harder road,
explaining where that first cell came from and why not all apes
evolved.
But even when science explains the working of a cell, it can’t explain
how a receptor knows why to relay which message to what source for
which activity. The absolute precision being carried out with an
unbelievable failure rate is something manufacturers can only hope to
achieve.
The complexity and perfection with which life sustains itself
inside these little cells is mind boggling. Evolutionists at the end of
the day accept that it just happened, a fluke. Creationists believe
such an amazing design begs of a designer.
Millions of people have experienced unexplainable events that indicate
a spiritual element among us. And who hasn’t looked at an orange,
butterfly or tulip and wondered how on earth that happened?
Believing an amoeba swam onto a rock and after millions of years became
us seems more logical, and is being taught in schools all across the
country. But if this accident really did occur, there can be no
greater miracle.
