ORP Update July
14, 2014
Matt Borges
Ohio Republican Party Chairman
Greetings!
Ohio had a lot to celebrate this week. The RNC Site Selection Committee
announced that they would be recommending Cleveland for the 2016
Republican National Convention. Hosting the 2016 Republican National
Convention in Cleveland is a big win for Ohio and for our next
presidential nominee. We will have the opportunity to share Ohio's
comeback story with the nation and demonstrate how powerful balanced
budgets, lower taxes, and a focus on job creation can be.
Thank you to everyone who helped secure the bid especially Governor
Kasich, Senator Portman, and Speaker Boehner, along with the entire
Cleveland 2016 team who showcased the city perfectly. It was a
tremendous team effort that will pay off big for our state and party.
Ohio Republican Party sues Ed FItzGerald
The Ohio Republican Party filed a lawsuit at the Ohio Supreme Court on
Wednesday to compel Democrat gubernatorial candidate Ed FitzGerald to
produce copies of public records that would indicate what hours he is
at County buildings or parking facilities. Not only has FitzGerald
failed to produce the records, he had not even responded to ORP's
request for the records. These are records that even FitzGerald's
predecessor Jimmy Dimora, who is in federal prison for public
corruption, would release. FitzGerald is desperate to hide these
records from the public and will waste even more taxpayer dollars in a
fruitless attempt to keep his secrets. You can find out more about the
suit here.
25,000 small business owners endorse Kasich-Taylor
Governor John Kasich and Lt. Governor Mary Taylor accepted an
endorsement by the National Federation of Independent Businesses while
touring the state on Tuesday. The Governor visited three small
businesses: Hamilton Caster & Manufacturing, Poelking Bowling Lane,
and Repacorp, while Lt. Governor Taylor made stops at Lima Pallet,
Wilson's Sandwich Shop, and Milligans Workshop. The six businesses
highlighted the vast improvements the Kasich administration has made to
aid small businesses within the state.
"What's good for small business is good for Ohio," Kasich said.
"Helping small businesses do what they do - create jobs - has been our
focus for the past four years, and they've responded by helping our
state to add over a quarter million new private sector jobs."
Lt. Gov. Taylor added, "Small business owners are the lifeblood of our
state and our communities. They're the little league sponsors, the good
Samaritans who help you up when you're down, and the job creators who
give people a chance at a brighter future. With the support of
NFIB/Ohio, our team can keep up Ohio's momentum for another four years
and finish the job we've started."
Here is a short video of the events that also features NFIB/Ohio's
Executive Director Roger Geiger stating why Governor Kasich and Lt.
Governor Taylor overwhelmingly received the endorsement for the second
time.
Morgan County adds 110 new jobs
Governor John Kasich was at Miba Sinter, an automotive parts
manufacture, on Thursday for to join in their ribbon cutting ceremony.
The McConnelsville company is bringing 110 new jobs to Morgan County
with the prospect of more in the coming years. Miba Sinter already
operates 20 plants around the world and this expansion is likely to
bring long term economic growth and stability to the area. You can read
more about the job announcement here.
Senator Portman's influence shines
Senator Rob Portman's role in bringing the 2016 GOP Convention to
Cleveland and his potential role in the 2016 elections were highlighted
in a Washington Post article this week.
Senator Portman also had a win on the policy front this week when the
four key components of his workforce development legislation known as
the Careers through Responsive, Efficient, and Effective Retraining
(CAREER) Act passed through Congress as part of the Workforce
Innovation and Opportunity Act. Portman's bill will consolidate 15
programs from our nation's federal workforce development system, give
priority to programs that lead to in-demand credentials in local areas,
provide more accountability by a new system called Pay for Success that
ties federal funding to actual results, and improve access to better
data to help local officials see how effective their training actives
are in real-time.
Ohio leads the way on breaking through rape kit backlog
Attorney General Mike DeWine and Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy
McGinty co-authored an Op-ed in the Washington Post this week. The
article highlighted the great strides Ohio has made in the effort to
decrease the backlog of untested sexual assault kits. A total of 140
law enforcement agencies in Ohio have submitted 8,001 rape kits for
testing by the Attorney General's Bureau of Criminal Investigation as
part of the SAK Testing Initiative.
"So far, more than 135 people have been indicted, including 37 John
Does. While the identities of these men are not known, they were
indicted to ensure that Ohio's 20-year statute of limitations for rape
does not expire before they can be brought to justice," the article
states.
Democratic challenger David Pepper tried to diminish the positive news
for DeWine by attacking the efforts that have brought so many rapists
to justice. Three Ohio newspapers were quick to call Pepper out on his
criticisms. The Cleveland Plain Dealer recognized the bipartisan
support DeWine has received for the initiative and stated that Pepper's
message was "grossly misleading," and the Columbus Dispatch concluded
they were "lame charges based on made-up problems." All three papers,
including the Akron Beacon Journal, acknowledged that Mike DeWine
stepped up when no one else would.
July's Ohio Business Profiles
Every month Secretary of State Jon Husted picks a handful of Ohio
companies to be a part of the Ohio Business Profile. In an effort to
recognize the ongoing advancements the state has made in the aerospace
industry, Secretary of State Jon Husted announced that July's Ohio
Business Profile features a wide variety of companies that support this
important business sector under the theme "Ohio Takes Flight."
Auditor Yost's leadership helps Scioto County and Mansfield out of
fiscal emergency
Auditor Yost recently traveled to Portsmouth and Mansfield and brought
with him good news of fiscal health. During his trips, Auditor Yost
praised the entities for their fiscal restraint and good bookkeeping
practices, saying Scioto County and the City of Mansfield have
"demonstrated they can stretch a dollar until George Washington screams
for mercy."
The Auditor's office led the way and provided Scioto County with
recommendations for more than $1.3 million in savings and Mansfield
with $3.3 million in savings through performance audits.
Treasurer's office hosts investment conference in Columbus
This week, Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel's office hosted the Central Ohio
Center for Public Investment Management (CPIM) Conference in
Columbus. CPIM provides continuing education for public funds
managers and the Treasurer's office hosts these conferences across the
state to help local officials as they work to safely manage their
constituents tax dollars. During this gathering, local government
investment officials heard presentations from several financial
professionals from Treasurer Mandel's office on important issues
ranging from investments to cyber security.
Sincerely,
Matt Borges
Chairman, Ohio Republican Party
