Update July 21
Greetings!
Ohio added 15,700 jobs in the month of June as Ohio's unemployment rate
remained well below the national average at 5.5%. Since 2011, Governor
Kasich and our Republican leadership team have turned Ohio's economy
around. Close to 263,000 new private sector jobs have been created,
making Ohio the 5th state in the nation in job creation since 2011.
These new economic numbers come from President Obama's own Bureau of
Labor Statistics, proving that our Republican team in Ohio have worked
tirelessly on Ohio's comeback. There is no doubt that we need to secure
four more years of progress in November.
Super Saturday
This weekend our Red to the Roots program organized a massive statewide
grassroots deployment. We had over 350 volunteers in all 88 counties
engaging with voters and knocking on doors. Thank you to everyone who
came out to support the Kasich-Taylor team, our statewide officials,
and our House and Senate races. Thank you to everyone who participated
and helped us make over 20,000 voter contacts and knock on over 12,000
doors. This grassroots, person to person contact is key to victory in
November.

Meet the real Ed FitzGerald
The Ohio Republican Party launched FitzGeraldforOhio.com this week to
educate voters on who Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Ed FitzGerald
really is. The site highlights the Democrat's record of incompetence,
mismanagement, and secrecy. The website doesn't just focus on partisan
rhetoric but instead lays out the many, many news articles published
about his numerous failures and missteps from impartial journalists. It
is likely that FitzGerald will continue to cover up public information
in an attempt to propel his political career, so we've taken the
opportunity to help voters meet the real Ed FitzGerald.
Governor Kasich partners with Mayor Coleman on Preschool
Governor John Kasich and Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman announced a
partnership between the state and Columbus on Friday to expand full-day
preschool programs for low-income children in Columbus. The expansion
aims to help more than 500 4-year-olds in the Columbus area have access
to full-time pre-kindergarten programs. The bi-partisan cooperation is
a testament to Governor Kasich's leadership and ability to get things
done.
Lt. Gov. Taylor praises Dayton's economic gain
In a recent Dayton Business Journal op-ed, Lt. Governor Mary Taylor
highlighted the Miami Valley's economic comeback and focused on how job
creation is strengthening our communities. The area's regional
unemployment numbers are down to 5.3%, a full percentage under the
national rate. That's remarkable considering the devastating job loss
that swept the area during the great recession.
"Turning around a situation like this isn't easy, but it starts with
sending the signal to job creators that you are going to create a
climate where it is safe for them to start rebuilding. That is why Gov.
John Kasich and I have worked so hard to create a jobs-friendly
economic climate in Ohio by erasing the state's $8 billion budget
shortfall without a tax increase, in fact by cutting taxes $3 billion -
including cutting small business taxes by 75 percent - and cutting the
red tape that can be a barrier to job growth. We've also made major new
investments in education and training, transportation, and care for
Ohioans who live in the shadows."
Senator Portman lays out anti-poverty agenda in Northeast Ohio
On Friday, Senator Rob Portman spoke at the City Club of Cleveland
about conservative approaches to addressing poverty, highlighting his
work on substance abuse prevention and treatment, prisoner reentry, and
stopping human trafficking. During his visit to Northeast Ohio, Senator
Portman also received the Freedom Award from the American Nationalities
Movement at their annual dinner on Thursday night.
Senator Portman also visited the Mahoning Valley, meeting with leaders
of the Youngstown-Warren Regional Chamber and visiting the GM Lordstown
plant to see the assembly of the Chevy Cruze. Senator
Portman serves as the co-chair of the Senate Auto Caucus and discussed
issues important to Ohio's auto industry during his visit.
New businesses setting record pace
Secretary of State Jon Husted announced that 7,660 new entities filed
to do business in Ohio in June 2014. These numbers are up compared to
June 2013, in which 7,185 new entities filed. The Secretary of State's
office has assisted with 49,254 new business filings to date in 2014
(January-June). This is an increase from the same time period last
year, in which there were 47,918 new business filings. In 2013, 89,735
businesses were created in Ohio, the most in state history, surpassing
the old record set in 2012. So far in 2014, Ohio is ahead of 2013's
record-breaking pace, with 49,254 new businesses created. You can read
more about the business filings here. It's another sign of our
Republican leaders working together to drive Ohio's comeback.
Treasurer Mandel accepts national award
This week, Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel accepted an award from the
national Association of Government Accountants (AGA) for "Excellence in
Financial Management." Treasurer Mandel was the only State Treasurer in
the nation to receive the award and the Executive Director of the AGA
said, "We are proud to give this award for excellence in financial
management to the Mandel Administration. Ohio's finances were not
in good shape just a few short years ago, and Treasurer Mandel has made
significant improvements for Ohio taxpayers."
Treasurer Mandel said, "In just over three years we've taken Ohio's
financial ranking from 43rd in the country to 7th in the country.
I'm proud of this progress and honored to bring this award back to Ohio
on behalf of my 11.5 million bosses."
Auditor Yost Continues to Fight for Taxpayers
Auditor Dave Yost Thursday took his fight against fraud into a chain of
19 charter schools located throughout Ohio, launching a special audit
looking into whether or not the schools purposefully manipulated tests
to inflate performance scores. The Columbus Dispatch praised
Auditor Yost's actions, saying the audit is "welcome and
necessary." Since 2011, Yost turned 22 corrupt charter school
officials into convicted criminals and found more than $9.3 million in
stolen and misspent public money.
Training law enforcement to prevent heroin deaths
Attorney General Mike DeWine launched a new program this week that will
allow law enforcement to take a course to learn more about the drug
naloxone. Naloxone can limit or stop an overdose of heroin or
prescription drugs if administered correctly. The course will train law
enforcement throughout Ohio on how to administer the drug and will then
allow them to carry it with them on duty. This program is designed to
be yet another tool to aid the fight against the heroin epidemic that
is plaguing Ohio and the county.
Sincerely,
Matt Borges
