Ohio Republican Party
ORP Update,
July 27. 2014
Matt Borges
Greetings!
It's 100 days until Election Day! As the day quickly approaches, we are
doing everything in our power to lay out an effective ground game.
Governor John Kasich and our Republican leadership have worked
tirelessly to get Ohio back to work and attract new businesses to
invest in our state. 263,000 private sector jobs have been created in
the last three years and unemployment is at its lowest rate since 2008.
We must keep this up! Our grassroots team - Red to the Roots - is in
full operation. Phone banks have now opened in Columbus, Independence,
Lisbon, Rocky River, Painesville, and Ashtabula and massive
door-to-door deployments have been organized across the state. Join our
efforts and get involved - help give our Republicans another four years
to continue Ohio's comeback!
Democrat FitzGerald clings to secrets
This week, the Columbus Dispatch reported that Democrat Ed FitzGerald
was considering coming clean with details of his plans to raise taxes
on Ohioans. For weeks, Ed FitzGerald has been proposing billions of
dollars in new spending with no way to pay for it other than raising
taxes. In total, FitzGerald has proposed over $2.3 billion in new
spending. It's similar to his county budget that actually spends more
than it takes in. FitzGerald has consistently opposed over $3
billion in tax relief for Ohioans and now we are learning that he
appears to be developing a secret plan to raise taxes on Ohioans.
Ohioans deserve to know the truth about FitzGerald's plans to spend
more money and raise taxes. His plans would drive Ohio back into
the ditch that our Republican leaders have worked so hard to get us out
of.
We are also still determined to get FitzGerald to also come clean about
his key card data, which would show when he is in Cuyahoga County
office building. Our key card volunteers were out again this week
asking him to come clean. Our lawsuit to compel him to turn over
the records is currently before the Ohio Supreme Court. For a man who
campaigns on transparency, he sure is trying to keep a lot of things
secret. You can find out more about all of FitzGerald's failings
at www.FitzGeraldforOhio.com.
RNC Chairman Priebus speaks at Urban League Conference
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus addressed the
National Urban League Conference in Cincinnati on Thursday. In his
remarks, Chairman Priebus made it clear that the Republican Party is
doing everything in its power to reach out to all voters.
"If there's one thing I'm trying to change-it's to make us a national
party, in every community, with full-time, paid, on-the-ground staff
making our case," he said.
Chairman Priebus concluded that the Republican Party strives to give
every single American the chance to achieve the American Dream and that
the Republican ideals can appeal to all.
Governor Kasich opens the 161st Ohio State Fair
Governor John Kasich opened the 161st Annual Ohio State Fair this
Wednesday. During the ceremony Governor Kasich expressed his
appreciation for the agricultural industry in Ohio and expressed his
excitement for this year's fair even amongst the opening day rain. For
the last three years, Governor Kasich has made the opening day a family
affair with his wife Karen and twin daughters, taking time to enjoy the
attractions, visit booths, and indulge in some fair cuisine. This year,
Kasich presided over the awards ceremony for the Agriculture is Cool
Creative Expression Contest.
The fair will continue through next Sunday, August 3rd. If you're able
to make it to Columbus, spend a few hours exploring what Ohio's
agricultural community has to offer at this year's fair. Also make sure
to visit us at the Ohio Republican Party booth. We look forward to
seeing you there!
Governor earns praise for helping Ohio's Kids
A recent Columbus Dispatch editorial highlighted how Governor John
Kasich is putting politics aside to help lift all Ohioans and create
better opportunities for our kids. The praise came after Governor John
Kasich and Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman announced a partnership
between the state and Columbus last week. The partnership is set to
expand full-day preschool programs for low-income children in Columbus.
Sinclair paving way for Veteran jobs
Lt. Governor Mary Taylor spent time at Sinclair Community College
Thursday, praising their efforts in veteran education and exploring
ways to integrate their policies within other institutions.
"Sinclair is doing a lot of the things that we'd like to see going on
in all of our public universities and colleges across the state of
Ohio," Taylor said.
Her visit comes a month after Governor Kasich signed into law an
initiative to get veterans college credit for their military training
to aid their transition when returning home. Sinclair College has a
special Veteran's Service Center to specifically help military students
and offer them valuable career services.
Senator Portman pushes for fiscal responsibility and tax reform
On Tuesday, Senator Rob Portman joined Neil Cavuto on Fox News to talk
about the need for Washington to address our nation's out-of-control
spending before it's too late. During the interview, Senator Portman
highlighted some of the points from his op-ed in the Wall Street
Journal titled "Heading off the Entitlement Meltdown." The U.S. debt is
projected to increase $10 trillion over the next decade and $100
trillion over the subsequent two decades, and Senator Portman proposes
addressing the problem by getting the economy moving, avoiding large
tax increases, and reforming Social Security and health entitlements.
Senator Portman also appeared on CNBC's Squawk Box Friday morning to
react to the President's claim that some American businesses are
"corporate deserters." If President Obama was serious about keeping
jobs in the U.S., he'd work with Republicans like Senator Portman to
advance corporate tax reform.
Attorney General DeWine helps solve East Coast cold case
Attorney General Mike DeWine announced this week that his office
collaborated with local authorities and investigators from three states
to help arrest a man charged with murder. Robert Honsch was tracked
down in Wayne County by law enforcement officials in Connecticut, New
York, and Massachusetts who were investigating the murder of Honsch's
wife and daughter since 1995. The Ohio Attorney General's office was
able to aid the efforts by processing evidence from the scene within 24
hours. Honsch is now being held in a Wayne County jail due to their
fantastic work.
Treasurer Mandel supports domestic energy production
This week, Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel was in Mahoning County to
celebrate the opening of the area's first compressed-natural-gas
fueling station. The event marked IGS CNG Services third CNG station
opening in Ohio.
"I've been very involved in advocating for the aggressive and
responsible exploration of natural resources," Mandel said. "I believe
domestic-energy production in Ohio and in America is a job creator for
our people, and also a way to become independent from radical Islamic
regimes in the Middle East."
Ohioans Continue to Use Auditor Yost's Fraud App
Reporting fraud in government is easier than ever thanks to Auditor
Dave Yost's Ohio Stops Fraud mobile app. In an interview this week with
WHIZ TV in Zanesville, Auditor Yost stressed the importance of tips in
the fight against government corruption. Since its unveiling earlier
this year, hundreds of Ohioans have downloaded and used the app to tell
the Auditor's office when they've seen something that just wasn't
right. You can download the Ohio Stops Fraud app today in the Google
Play and Apple Stores.
In other fraud news, Auditor Yost's opponent spent the week twisting
his "facts" and turning a serious fraud investigation of bad charter
schools into a political sideshow. To make matters worse, just a year
ago, Democrat Ohio Rep. John Carney honored the school under
investigation on the Ohio House floor. He went so far as to say,
"...These fine professionals have earned the respect and gratitude of
the community, and they are truly deserving of high praise..." There is
no room for politics in this investigation, and there is no room for
Rep. Carney in the Auditor of State's office.
Secretary of State Husted visits Morrow County
Secretary of State Jon Husted visited Morrow County June 20th to attend
their GOP Picnic. During the event, Secretary Husted rallied the crowd
by recounting the efforts our Republican leadership across Ohio has
made to get Ohio back on the right track. He cited the drop in
unemployment that has taken place under Governor John Kasich and the
record breaking New Business Filings that are filed through his office
each day. Ohio has made great strides in the last three years and it is
crucial that Ohio stays on the right track.
We are coming down the homestretch of campaign 2014. Now is when voters
are really starting to pay attention to the races. Our Republican
leadership has a great story to tell about Ohio's comeback. It is up to
us to help them spread the message.
Sincerely,
Matt Borges
