Little Pictures
By Mona Lease

Hi, all!! Ok readers - Hands up - how many of you remember hearing not to borrow trouble - it will come soon enough on its own? I think trouble is here. I think we are trying to treat a "symptom" and the disease (if you will) goes unchecked.

Remember our local school board wanting to pass a new levy a few years ago now? It failed the first two or three times. Now it's passed. Remember the president of the school board resigning and telling that the provisionary votes were really empty envelopes? The kiddies - Little Pictures - heard that.

Remember the Afro-American man that approached our city council about bringing in an office of his company? Remember how a then-councilman offered him a racial slur wrapped in a joke? Remember the apologies in our local tabloids from the other council members and our then-mayor the following two days, respectively? The kiddies heard that - and the ones that could read - read it, too.

Remember how a newly elected councilman argued - in print - in our local tabloids - with a local business owner? And the commissioner signed his professional title to his name? The kiddies saw, heard, and read that, too.

When was the last time you saw someone taking a dog for a walk? When was the last time you saw someone walking with a kiddie...on a regular basis? Trick or treating and parades do not count. The kiddies see this, too.

Now - imagine being a kiddie - say 10 - 16 years old. Wouldn't you think that the adults make their own rules? And - you can do that when you get "older", too. Wouldn't you think that you might be "bait" on a hook - "It will be a couple of years and we will have a new school - when the levy passes" - is what the kiddies were promised - by the Superintendent - remember? Some kiddies never got to "be all they can be" in the new school. Most parents could not afford the property tax hike. The Little Pictures heard all of this, too.

Imagine being 10 and hearing that a new - "state of the art" school is coming. You will get better grades there. What if you believed you could really get better grades in a brand new school? What happens when you realize that you still need to study? Some of the kiddies have realized that. And - in too many situations - the parents are divorced. One of the parents does not have enough time for the biological kiddies - and does not really want the responsibility of the new step-kiddie.

Aren't we telling the kiddies to act one way while we are showing them - as adults - you can act another way? Seriously - we all know right from wrong. No one wants to be cheated on - lied to - stolen from - talked about...picked on because of eye glasses, skin color, mental faculties, etc.

Enter heroin - the latest "kick" in a long line of "kicks." Remember the '60s and the "West Coast" fad of seeing a psychiatrist, taking seconal, tuonals and drinking wine? The Little Pictures saw that, too. And just like last week's loaded gun - heroin - or any "kick" - is dangerous on either end. As a force drives the ammunition from the firearm - the thoughts and feelings will be driven by the drug - alcohol, pot, or - in today's world - heroin. Would now be a good time to take a look to see what example we are setting for any Little Picture - at any age?

Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next time. Ever Toodles!!  MONA
