Ohio Republican Party
Greetings!
Matt Borges
Editor’s Note: Borges recently attended the Darke County Republican Pig
Roast.
16 days until Election Day! There is no time to let up. The
Democratic turnout the vote machine is in full swing and we must
surpass them.
Ohio's unemployment rate fell to 5.6% in September, down from 7.4% this
time last year. It was only four short years ago that unemployment was
skyrocketing and Ohio's future was on unsteady ground. Due to the hard
work of Governor Kasich and our Republican leaders, Ohio's economy is
once again moving in the right direction. We must make sure this
progress continues this November.
We need your help. Over the next 16 days we will have door-to-door and
phone banking efforts in all 88 counties including a massive Super
Saturday effort on October 25th. In the last week we made over
100,000 calls, but we must do more in order to win. Please think about
lending a hand to help our Republican leaders cross the finish line.
Contact Meghan Wadsworth at (216) 297-5479 for more details.
ORP hosts Cathy McMorris Rodgers
On Friday, the Ohio Republican Party welcomed Congresswoman Cathy
McMorris Rodgers for a Women Leadership Roundtable. Among the
participants were Former Speaker Jo Ann Davidson, Former Ohio Auditor
and Attorney General Betty Montgomery, Former Congresswoman Deborah
Pryce, State Rep. Nan Baker, State Rep. Stephanie Kunze, State Rep.
Christina Hagan, State Rep. Margaret Ann Ruhl, ORP Political Director
Katie Eagan, OHROC Political Director Brittany Warner, and Tiberi for
Congress Campaign Manager Kristen Frissora.
The event focused on the amazing accomplishments of female elected
officials in Ohio and what it takes to get more women involved. Thank
you to all of the participants for a wonderful discussion! Electing
more strong Republican women to office is a goal of the Ohio Republican
Party and it is also good for our state.
FitzGerald hides the truth
Ed FitzGerald lost another round in his ongoing fight to hide the
truth. The Ohio Supreme Court denied Democratic gubernatorial candidate
Ed FitzGerald's attempts to seek mediation for the ORP's public records
lawsuit this week. Ed FitzGerald has refused to release his public
keycard data that would indicate when he came to and from Cuyahoga
County government buildings. His refusal to hand over the records
raised even more questions when it was discovered that FitzGerald drove
without a license while taking tax funded gas reimbursements and
punishing employees for lesser license infractions. The ORP remains
committed to finding out what Ed FitzGerald is hiding.
The Toledo Blade wrote an article this week rightly entitled "Dead Man
Walking," laying out the bumpy road Ed FitzGerald's campaign has taken.
When rehashing Ed FitzGerald's decisions over the course of his
campaign, the writer states: "I would not hire someone like that to run
a hot dog stand," much less elect him to govern the state. We couldn't
agree more.
Carney lies
Democratic candidate for Auditor John Patrick Carney released an ad
last week that has been criticized for its inaccuracy from the start.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer evaluated it in detail this week and
concluded that, "This ad is the definition of a cheap shot, lacking
even a kernel of truth to most of its assertions and produced at a time
when Carney's campaign could have - and should have - known the real
facts."
It is entirely disconcerting that a man who wants to be the state's
fiscal watchdog is so nonchalant about cooking up numbers. Watch
Auditor Yost's new ad here and see why he is the clear choice for
re-election.
Ohio Democrats enlist the help of Jerry Springer
Nina Turner enlisted Jerry Springer to campaign with her this week. The
radical TV personality accompanied the democratic candidate for
Secretary of State on the trail in Trumbell County to urge Democrats to
vote early.
Kasich's leads Ebola response
It was discovered this week that an Ebola infected Dallas nurse spent
days in Ohio while being at risk of spreading the deadly virus. Since
the news broke, Governor John Kasich has been dedicated to make sure
that Ohio is prepared to deal with any spread of the virus within the
state.
In fact, the state has gone above and beyond what the federal
government has done. Governor Kasich has implemented stricter protocols
than the federal government has and when the CDC didn't know how to get
experts to Ohio quickly, Governor Kasich chartered them a plane at 2
a.m.
The state is also stocking up on equipment that will be needed if the
virus were to spread.
"At the end of the day, we're doing everything we can possibly do,"
said Governor Kasich. You can read more about Ohio's response here.
More jobs for Ohio
Lt. Governor Mary Taylor was on hand to celebrate two major job
announcements this week, one in Findlay and the other in Franklin
County. The new Avnet CenterPoint Value-Added Services Center, the
largest Avnet facility in the world, plans to create 300 new jobs for
the state after a $120 million private investment. What makes Avnet's
new facility even more remarkable is their commitment to hire military
veterans.
Lt. Governor Taylor stated that this "commitment to hire our military
veterans is especially telling of the kind of corporate citizen and
member of the community Avnet is now and will be in the future."
The second major jobs announcement was for the Northwest Ohio company
McLane, which plans to add 425 new jobs in Findlay. The grocery
distributor plans to invest $119 million into their new distribution
center.
Senator calls for travel restrictions to help combat Ebola
This week, Senator Rob Portman continued to push the Administration to
do more to combat Ebola. To better protect our citizens, Senator
Portman called on the State Department to immediately stop issuing
visas to citizens of Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea. He has also
called the State Department to revoke all non-executed visas that have
already been issued. Since this crisis began, our government has issued
more than 6,000 visas to nationals from the affected countries in
Africa and on average continues to issue over a hundred such visas
every day.
Senator Portman has called for Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to
expand active screenings to the remaining international airports and
enforce current law by imprisoning those who lie to CBP/CDC officials
about their Ebola exposure or travel history.
In addition to his work on combating Ebola, Senator Portman has also
been traveling around Ohio and the nation this week. On
Tuesday, he was helping efforts to fire Harry Reid and win a Republican
majority in the U.S. Senate by campaigning in New Hampshire for U.S.
Senate candidate Scott Brown. On Wednesday, Portman spoke at the Preble
County Fall Banquet in Eaton. On Thursday, Senator Portman visited
PolyOne Corporation in Avon Lake, met with Cleveland Mayor Frank
Jackson and public health officials, and attended a drug abuse
roundtable with Congressman Jim Renacci in Parma.
Secretary of State Husted endorsements pour in
Secretary of State Jon Husted released a new ad this week highlighting
the endorsements he has received from across the state.
The Cincinnati Enquirer also announced their endorsement for Husted on
Friday (after the ad's production), stating that Husted's "steady hand
on election decisions, such as mailing absentee ballot applications to
all registered voters and making early voting times consistent
statewide" warranted re-election this fall.
Mandel releases new ad
This week Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel released a new television ad which
is running in media markets across the state. The ad, entitled "Facts,"
highlights Treasurer Mandel's record of reform and how he has worked to
take Ohio's financial ranking from 43rd in the country to 7th in the
country.
Endorsements pile up for DeWine
Attorney General Mike DeWine received endorsements this week from
across the state including the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Canton
Repository, the Times Gazette, and the Akron Beacon Journal. Among the
endorsements, DeWine received praise for his "solid record of effective
action," and his ability to represent Ohioans. All of the endorsements
pointed towards DeWine's efforts to significantly reduce the wait time
for crime lab results and his push to test backlogged rape kits across
the state.
Auditor Yost endorsed by the Canton Repository and Cincinnati Enquirer
Two more of Ohio's largest newspapers put their support behind Auditor
Dave Yost this week. The Canton Repository's endorsement touts his
record, saying he's "repeatedly gone to bat for Ohioans' interests
since he took office in 2011." The Cincinnati Enquirer described
Auditor Yost as "an able and courageous watchdog for the state." Both
papers commended Auditor Yost for his independence and have full faith
that he'll continue fighting for Ohio's taxpayers.
Mercer County hosts Justice French
Supreme Court Justice Judi French was invited to speak at the Mercer
County Women in Leadership Luncheon this week. During the event,
Justice French reflected on the important role women play in politics
within the state and across the county. Over 50 women attended the
event, representing five different counties.
Justice Kennedy speaks in Marion
Supreme Court Justice Sharon Kennedy attended the Marion Ohio
Republican Party Women's Club Luncheon this week. While there, Justice
Kennedy addressed the members of the club on the importance of the
judicial branch and her race this fall. The event also featured Justice
Judi French.
Thank you for all your work to get us this far. Victory is in sight but
all work will be for nothing if we don't finish strong.
Sincerely,
Matt Borges
