Deliberate Harm
By Kate Burch
A couple of weeks ago, one of my Facebook friends posted a photo of two
young children, one white, one black, walking in a wooded scene, with
hands clasped. The caption above the photo was, “This is where we
need to be.” I commented, “Really, most of us are there
already.” No response received.
A couple of my black friends have decried the recent and current
worsening perceptions of race relations during the course of the Obama
administration. One remarked, “Why do they have to make
everything about race?”
It is supremely ironic that Barack Obama was supposed to be the leader
who would bring an end to racism, among other utopian dreams.
During his tenure, we have instead seen, even from the top, what are
almost certainly deliberate provocations of racial animus.
Surely, a president should know that it encourages race-baiters and
incites resentments when he jumps to conclusions and takes sides,
prematurely and inappropriately, in situations involving police actions
against black suspects. Could he not recognize that it upsets
people who only want fair and fraud-free elections when his Attorney
General accuses advocates of Voter ID laws that they are trying to
disenfranchise blacks? When the president recommends disciplining
students differently according to their color, he certainly should know
that such practice is bound to cause great concern to parents who want
a safe school environment for their children. We are experiencing
a rash of incidents in which police officers are defied, provoked, and
attacked. Is it any wonder, when the provocateurs have reason to
expect that they will receive applause for this, instead of reprisal?
The numbers: CNN reported in March that the percentage of people
polled who think that race relations have improved during the Obama
presidency has fallen to 14%, from 32% in 2009. People who thing
race relations have grown worse grew to 39% from 6%. Gallup
reported in January that 62% were “somewhat dissatisfied” or “very
dissatisfied” with the state of race relations, compared to 40% in
2008.
Community organizers who follow the Alinsky method work to create
chaos; to create and encourage division, rather than bringing people
together. Obama proudly proclaimed that he was a community
organizer before being elected to public office. Apparently, he
has not given up that job.
