Commissioners Corner
Airport news to
come; July notes
From wet and cool to hot and humid, July has certainly been a mixed bag
of weather. The first half of the month was a continuation of June with
rain and cool temperatures almost daily, and now the last week or so,
it has been more like a Darke County July, hot and humid. It really is
time for us to start getting summertime weather here, so I guess we
can’t complain too much, except for all the rain.
July was not a good month for folks in the northern and western part of
the county. These areas received 5 to 7 inches of rain the evening of
July 13th, and many residents sustained a lot of damage to their homes
and property. Mindy Saylor, the Darke County E.M.A. director and Josh
Haney, her assistant, spent many hours trying to help people by
assessing the damage, and working with F.E.M.A. (Federal Emergency
Management Agency) to try and get some help and get Darke County some
federal money. Unfortunately, we fell far short of F.E.M.A.
requirements for federal assistance. Thanks to Mindy and Josh and all
of our emergency personnel who selflessly gave help to their neighbors
and friends on that evening. The Darke County Courthouse, and the
County Commissioners office suffered some water in their basements, but
thanks to Marty Munchel and our maintenance crew, they took care of it
very quickly. Thanks to those hard-working gentlemen!
In other happenings in the County, The Darke County airport is seeing
some interest from people who want to make our airport their home base.
The airport has received some needed upgrades, too, with a new card
reader for fuel, and we are in the process of having the fuel tanks
inspected and cleaned. We hope to announce some more changes in the
near future. The Commissioners office has been fairly quiet, but we
have been working on projects and waiting to make announcements as soon
as we get things wrapped up, and signed.
On July 24th, the Darke County C.I.C. and Partnering 4 Progress held
their summer meeting and golf outing at Stillwater Golf Course. The
meeting was well attended with about 60 people showing up for the
meeting and 28 people playing golf. Marc Saluk, the E.D. director, made
a very good presentation reminding us how far we have come and how well
we have done compared to other counties in the State. Marc made the
point that we are very fortunate and should be thankful for what we
have accomplished. Lisa Wendel, the Career Pathway Coordinator, gave a
really good presentation on our vision for the future. This included
mentorships, company visits by students and School leaders, Job
shadowing, and another manufacturing day in October. This program is
one of the most advanced in the State, and although it is still in its
infancy, this program is starting to bear fruit. Congratulations to
Marc, Lisa and Melanie Nealeigh, the office manager, for making our
E.D. office the best in the State!
On personal notes, Commissioner Diane Delaplane has decided not to run
for another term next year. This was a hard decision for her, but as
she said, it was time. Diane has been our social coordinator, and
always remembers birthdays, and represents Darke County in a positive
light all the time. Diane has one more year before her term is up, so
she still has a lot of work to do. Our whole office wishes her well in
the future. On July 29th, Commissioner Mike Rhoades and his wife Linda
celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary. Congratulations to two fine
people. One thing is certain, Linda is certainly heaven bound and
slated for sainthood for sure!!
August is upon us and with that comes hot weather and the Great Darke
County Fair! As the summer begins to wind down, won’t you come to a
Commissioner’s meeting? We meet every Monday and Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
in the Commissioner’s office located at 520 South Broadway in downtown
Greenville, just south of the Courthouse. Hope to see you there!!
