Ohio Republican Party
ORP Update
Focusing on jobs and the taxpayers. That's a major difference between
Ohio Republicans and Ohio Democrats. A little over 4 years ago,
under Democrat Ted Strickland, our state faced massive job lost, tax
hikes, and an $8 billion budget hole. Now our Republican team has
delivered $5 billion in tax cuts, a $2 billion surplus and economic
growth. This week Ohio Republicans continued to focus on the economy
and fiscal discipline. It continues to pay dividends for our state.
Portman takes jobs tour across Ohio
This week Senator Rob Portman traveled over 1,500 miles across Ohio,
visiting 13 counties on a jobs tour highlighting his support for
policies to grow and create jobs here in a Ohio and around the country.
Portman met with agricultural manufacturers at Hirzel Canning near
Toledo, saw Abrams tanks being built in Lima, held a national security
forum in Springfield, and received the Spirit of Enterprise Award from
the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Columbus and Wooster.
Portman visited More than Gourmet in Akron to highlight an example of
Portman's office helping a company grow jobs through expanding their
exports into new markets. Portman also visited General Extrusions and
held a Roundtable with small business owners in Youngstown to get input
from Ohio job creators.
On Wednesday night, over 200 supporters showed up for the grand opening
of the Portman for Senate field office in Brecksville. Cuyahoga County
GOP Chairman Rob Frost and Brecksville Mayor Jerry Hruby were on hand
to help stress the importance of this Senate race and the many failures
of Ted Strickland's tenure as governor.
On Thursday, Portman visited a coal mine in Eastern Ohio and joined
coal miners to go down into the mine. The burdensome Washington
regulations they support are putting Ohio power plants out of business,
destroying Ohio's coal jobs, and leading to higher energy prices for
Ohio families and small businesses. Rob Portman believes we should
utilize the energy resources we have right here, in the ground, in
Ohio. We can do it in a safe and responsible way, and we can add
thousands of jobs in the energy sector.
On Friday, Portman visited General Engine Products, a division of AM
General, the original designer and manufacturer of the Humvee. Portman
also visited US Aeroteam in Dayton and Ilsco in Cincinnati.
Governor Kasich's presidential bid picks up steam
Balancing the federal budget for the first time since man walked on the
moon, working as a defense reformer in Congress, and leading the Ohio
Comeback, all these things are grabbing the attention of voters in New
Hampshire and the nation. Our Governor is up to 3rd place in New
Hampshire, just one point behind Jeb Bush and a handful of points
behind Donald Trump. The Governor is winning over voters one at a time
in town hall meetings. We all know his record in Ohio: 350,000 jobs,
solving an $8 billion budget hole, and cutting taxes by $5 billion. Now
the rest of the nation is learning it and liking it too.
Jobs coming back to Ohio
Senator Portman, Lt. Governor Mary Taylor and others were on hand as
the first Ford F650 rolled off the line in Avon Lake. Over 1000 jobs
are moving from Mexico to Ohio as a result. The move is something that
the Kasich administration and others has been working on since 2011.
Attorney General DeWine targets heroin
Attorney General Mike DeWine has made battling the scourge of the
heroin epidemic a top priority of his office. He has been bringing
together local law enforcement agencies, public service agencies, his
office and other stakeholders to tackling the problem together. The
most recent meeting was Friday in Medina.
Auditor Yost uncovers tax dollars being gambled
Auditor Yost's special audit of a local school district uncovered that
the superintendent gambled away $35,000 of taxpayer money at a casino
during school hours. The school official has pleaded guilty and
all the money is expected to be repaid.
Ohio taxpayers are lucky that we have Auditor Yost looking out for us.
Secretary Husted cuts his own budget
Secretary of State Husted continues to put the taxpayers first. He was
able to report this week that he has cut his budget by 16 percent. As a
result he's been able to lower the cost of starting and maintaining a
business in Ohio. That's conservative leadership: saving money and
passing it on to the taxpayers and job creators to create more jobs and
economic growth.
Mandel talks transparency again
This week Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel spoke to the City Club of
Cleveland, giving a presentation on "Government Transparency in the
21st Century."
During his speech, Treasurer Mandel unveiled the cities of Euclid and
North Royalton as the latest local governments to join his Transparency
Partnership.
"This is a way for you to hold us accountable. This empowers everyday
citizens to hold us accountable," Treasurer Mandel said.
Sincerely,
Matt Borges
