U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown
National
Mentoring Month
January is National Mentoring Month—an opportunity to recognize and
celebrate the essential role mentors play in communities across the
country. Mentors are caring adults who take time from their busy
schedules to guide young people and help them make positive decisions,
build on their unique strengths, and identify and achieve individual
goals.
Mentees are connected with adult mentors through community
organizations, schools, faith-based organizations, and businesses and
each mentor-mentee relationship looks different. A strong mentorship
relationship can provide lasting positive impacts both in the classroom
and beyond and change the course of a young person’s life.
Studies have shown students with quality mentoring relationships
perform better academically, have higher attendance, and can be more
likely to avoid risky behavior. Not only do these partnerships provide
emotional support and benefits to the mentor and mentee, but there is
also an economic benefit to our communities. According to one report,
each dollar invested in resources for mentoring programs generates
approximately three dollars in return.
Every week, several of U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown’s (D-OH) staff
members spend their lunch break reading and engaging with elementary
school students. Sen. Brown is also an original cosponsor of a Senate
resolution recognizing January as National Mentorship Month. While
millions of people across the country take time out of their daily
lives to engage in formal mentorship programs, there are still millions
more children out there who could benefit from a formal mentoring
relationship. You can find information about getting involved with
mentorship by visiting the Corporation for National and Community
Service (CNCS) website.
Sen. Brown thanks all Ohioans who volunteer their time to make a
positive impact on the life of others.
