Great Darke County Fair
Rain or no
rain, it’s opening day
By Jan Boyer
Threat of rain.... cancel a fun evening at the Great Darke County
Fair? No way would many dyed in the wool fair goers think of
it! What are a few drops of rain or even a downpour compared to
opening day at the Fair?
As a few drops of water hit my glasses while I was walking toward the
main gate at the Fairgrounds, I knew I would probably not make it to my
car before the predicted deluge got me soaked. Imagine my wonder at the
many visitors who were entering the grounds despite the predicted
storm! Young, old, in strollers or using walkers, it did not
matter to them. This was the first day of the Fair and they were
going to be there!
From friends I hear that their grown children, grandchildren and even
great grandchildren come from afar during this special week of the
summer to experience the wonders and ambience of the Great Darke County
Fair. It was part of their youth and they want their kids and
grandkids to share in the good times. Some parents feel like
their homes become substitute motels during this event while others
gratefully share the experience each year with their offspring.
This fairgoer grew up in Mercer County and thought the Mercer County
Fair in Celina was the best there could be next to the Ohio State
Fair! Little did I know until we retired to Greenville seventeen
years ago that a county fair could be so great! Some think our
fair even rivals the State Fair in Columbus, that its only difference
is its commercialism! I have not attended the State Fair since
1957 so I am not a good judge. However, fair patrons observing
our myriad fine arts and photography works in the Fine Arts Building
have commented that ours are superior to the Fine Arts in Columbus.
However, I diverge from the subject of the dedication of Darke
Countians, their relatives and many others who come from far and wide
to experience the gem we have in ours midst, the Great Darke County
Fair, rain or no rain!
